This new home compliments its historic neighbors overlooking the river in St. Paul. Warm walnut paneling greets you in the foyer and continues throughout the house through arched openings in the library, living room and dining room. This alignment of thresholds connects distinct spaces, creating a layered experience of craftsmanship and elegance. Designed by Paul Hannan, AIA with Katie Leaf, AIA

This bunkhouse addition seamlessly attaches to the first phase of a North Woods retreat via a raised walkway south of the main building. The bunkhouse includes two uninsulated, seasonal sleeping boxes. Moments of porosity are inherent to the design, reinforcing a closeness to nature. Physical interconnections between inside and outside were a driving consideration for the family - they desired accommodations that recall the sleeping porches of their childhood, 1940s-era family cabin. Designed by David O’Brien Wagner, AIA with Caitlin Dippo and Nate Ehrlich.

This one-bedroom cabin pairs an exterior of sleek black metal and vibrant blue accents with an interior clad in warm wood. The dynamic volumes of space invite natural light to stream in, while a commitment to energy efficiency reminds us that a small ecological footprint can be charming and comfortable. A spacious screened porch extends the living space into the surrounding woods, offering a panoramic setting for relaxing, gathering, and enjoying the outdoors.

This remodel project includes multiple pleasant connections between the home and the outdoors. The main entry was previously dark and recessed. Now, an enclosed vestibule offers a graceful and welcoming transition inside from Minnesota winters. The flexible patio conversion also has increased function. Adding enclosure to the existing uncovered area improves protection from weather, extends its use throughout seasons, and provides a secondary entrance. Inside, an office addition has plentiful daylight and views of the surrounding garden and landscape. Designed by Marc Sloot, AIA, CGHP

Structural failings led Bryan Anderson, AIA to remodel the living room of his own century-old, single-level bungalow. The flat ceiling was removed to reinforce rafters and add ties from the interior, creating an opportunity to shape a vaulted light well to a new skylight inserted between existing rafters.

The living room walls suffered from a rough plaster texture and multiple cracks, but that plaster also provided some rigidity for the installation of new lapped siding over it. The laps align with siding on the porch, providing continuity between inside and out.

Visit Eric Odor's own house on this year's Homes by Architects Tour, which he remodeled with aging-in-place in mind. He and his wife love their 1905 Minneapolis home and surrounding community. The minor addition and a major remodel provided this 1800 square foot home with an open plan that lives large and nourishes personal retreats, so that it lives small as well. There is now enhanced exposure to the exterior gardens and the interior orchids, and screened porches connect them with the neighbors passing by. Check out Home 9 on September 19th and 20th! This cabin addition offers space for guests to share in the serenity of hilly Wisconsin fields. In the new sleeping room, a wall of storage seamlessly integrates with the cabin’s maple plywood walls and ceilings. The colors and patterns of the carpet tiles reflect the surrounding patchwork of farm fields. The complimentary shed roofs of the existing cabin and the new addition form the shape of a butterfly pausing in the meadow. Designed by Jody McGuire, AIA.

This year's Homes by Architects Tour is expanding beyond the Twin Cities to feature two homes in Rochester, MN, including Orchard House! It is nestled between an apple orchard to the north and a wildlife management area to the south. The home is organized on an east-west axis for passive solar design, while aligning vistas from the home into the tree rows. A simple palette of corrugated siding, thermally modified wood planks, galvanized structure, and Douglas fir combine harmoniously to create a quiet presence on the landscape. Visit Home 12 on September 19 & 20!
