TEA2 is honored to have our Lake Minnetonka home featured in Shingle Style Houses: The Evolution of an Inventive Architecture, a new book by architect John R. DaSilva, FAIA, published by Schiffer. The book documents 28 homes across the United States and Canada that embody and reimagine the enduring principles of the Shingle Style. The evolution of Shingle Style including examples of historic masterpieces by McKim, Mead & White, and H. H. Richardson, provide an informative context to view the contemporary interpretations from the past three decades. Drawing on more than 40 years of practice, DaSilva traces the style's roots and evolution and looks closely at each home's form, materials, and character. As architect Mark Wright puts it in the book's foreword, "The Shingle Style belongs to all of us."
Shingle Style homes have long been a TEA2 signature, here in Minnesota and beyond, alongside the stone houses, both classic and contemporary, that we're well known for. To us, the Shingle Style has always been about freedom. It grew out of more rigid historical styles and was often used for summer homes, where life was more relaxed and the architecture wanted to be less impressive, more fun and less substantial. Wrapping walls and roofs in shingles made the forms sculptural, and the details could be playful or restrained, sometimes within the same house. At its best, the style combines the delight of invention, even surprise, with the comfort of the familiar.
The featured home sits on a long, narrow lot between a broad bay of Lake Minnetonka and a quiet, reed-filled creek. The main living spaces stretch between those two views and soak up southern light all day. A ridge runs through the middle of the site, so the house was shaped to read as a charming cottage on a knoll. The garage is tucked underneath, out of sight, and the owner's suite fills a story-and-a-half roof of gables and dormers. Curves appear throughout: shingles molded around a sweeping dormer, a bowed balcony, an elliptical bluestone terrace wall. They give the house the sense of play that defines the style at its best.
