We won a ROMA. 🏆

Last week at Housing First Minnesota’s BIG Night, Hanson Design Build Remodel took home a Remodeler of Merit Award for Addition Under $300,000.

Here’s what that actually means. ROMAs aren’t judged on budget or square footage. A panel of remodelers from across Minnesota scores every entry on four things: the client’s goals, the challenges in the way, how well we solved them, and overall impression. An entry has to earn at least 75% of the possible points to win anything at all. There are no runner-ups.

So this award isn’t really about what we built. It’s about how well we listened.

Karla — you designed this one. Every detail those judges scored started with you sitting down and understanding how a family actually wanted to live. We’re so proud of you. 💚

To our crew, past and present: thank you for pouring yourselves into every project the way you do. This one has all of your fingerprints on it.

Nobody falls in love with a bathroom because of the square footage. It’s the little things.

The black-and-white border tile, laid just like the original. The cross-handle faucet that looks like it’s been there for 100 years (it hasn’t). The arched ceiling over the shower that makes it feel like its own little room.

This Diamond Lake family wanted a bathroom that works for today without losing the charm they loved. So we kept the character and rebuilt everything else.

This Longfellow kitchen is a great example of what thoughtful remodeling can do with the space you already have — smart storage, purposeful cabinetry, better flow, and just enough personality to make it feel completely its own.

Before + after like this is exactly why we love working on older Twin Cities homes.

This Cape Cod had charm, but the upper level was limiting how the family could actually use the house. Rather than leave the neighborhood they loved, they transformed the home into a full second story with far more usable space.

The goal wasn’t to make it look “new.” It was to make the addition feel like it had always belonged there.

For homeowners in Minneapolis and St. Paul’s older neighborhoods, that’s the opportunity: stay rooted, add the space you need, and keep the character that made you fall in love with the home in the first place.

Old-home charm doesn’t have to mean living with a bathroom that no longer works for you.

This South Minneapolis transformation took an awkward, underused upper level and turned it into a true second floor — including a spacious primary suite and a bathroom designed for real life. The new bath adds a double vanity with generous storage, plenty of counter space, and a large shower with multiple shower heads and a built-in bench.
