Not all water damage jobs are created equal, and nowhere is that more true than in Knoxville's historic neighborhoods.
Whether we’re working on a property in Fort Sanders, Sequoyah Hills, Old North Knoxville, or Fountain City, historic homes are a huge part of what makes our community special.
When you're dealing with homes built 80 to 120 years ago, what’s behind those walls is often irreplaceable, and treating an older home like modern drywall construction is a recipe for secondary mold damage.
Here are a few critical things that make older Knoxville properties fundamentally different during a loss:
Plaster Walls vs. Drywall
Plaster is significantly denser and retains moisture much longer. If a contractor tries to dry plaster using standard drywall protocols, they’ll trap water behind the lath, triggering hidden microbial growth.
Original Hardwoods & Subfloors
These floors have often survived a century of local history. They are well worth saving, but restoring them requires specialized, non-invasive drying mats and gradual moisture extraction.
Historic Brick & Stone Foundations
Older stone and brick foundations absorb and release moisture entirely differently, requiring a custom approach to crawlspace v***r barriers and drainage.
Decades of Renovations
Many of these homes have been updated in phases over 100 years. Moisture loves to hide in double-framed walls, dead spaces, and former porch additions that don't match the home's current layout.
If you’re a Realtor managing a historic listing, a property manager taking care of a heritage asset, or a homeowner preserving a piece of Knoxville history, just calling any restoration company can go wrong fast. These homes deserve a team that understands the building science behind them.
At AdvantaClean, we don't use high-pressure scare tactics or destructive quick fixes.
