Building a granny flat? There’s been some changes.

As of Thursday 15 January 2026, building a granny flat or small stand-alone dwelling (SSAD) may not require a building consent and/or a resource consent.
The government’s goal is to give homeowners more options and increase housing supply.
You’ll still need to make sure your granny flat meets the Building Code, and the building work must be done by or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP). This means firstly, you’ll need to contact us and apply for a PIM before the work starts.
