ADNZ Regional Awards 2026 | Regional Award for Home Interiors | St Barnabas

The Judges said: Skilfully designed cabinetry forms complete elements with the surrounding interiors. The spatial arrangement contrasts the texture of cream brick with the lustre of oiled wood to frame the path through the house to the garden. In the kitchen, dark timber frames a spectacular green veined marble, celebrating both materials, and the sunlight that falls across them.

The Judges said: Adjacent to the Wairarapa stream, the private side of this house hovers over the land, with cantilevered floors and steps with individual treads enhancing this effect. This contrasts to the entry, where the architectural language is grounded onto patterned permeable paving. Nice detailing and beautiful material choices allow the proportions to come to the fore.

The Judges said: This multi-unit project is a good study in site planning, working existing established trees into the proposal, using these as a start point for allocating protected shared space for the development as a whole. This intensity of development represents better use of resources at a broader scale, with considerably less land and material use per dwelling. Shading and shelter have been neatly incorporated through projection of the external walls over doorways, increasing the sense of privacy to each dwelling.
