When a site has limited ground area, the only logical way to gain space is to look upward. For this renovation, adding an entire upper story allowed us to completely re-imagine how the home interacts with its surroundings. By replacing a traditional closed facade with a large, structurally framed window and a seamless glass balustrade, we opened the home to the street and opened up a new view to the sea, welcoming in the light and establishing a new sense of presence. We created a bold character of the dark weatherboard exterior and introduced a striking red door creating a deliberate point of entry. This approach proves that you do not need a larger footprint to dramatically increase your spatial flow and connection to the environment.

These sample boards look at how warm tones—from deep cinnamon to robust reds—can be used to establish a strong sense of materiality and place.

For us, the integration of colour and material is a technical tool used to manage spatial flow and emotional comfort, ensuring the building forms a lasting, site-specific relationship with its environment.

The start of winter is a reminder that architecture should do more than just frame a view. A home must act as an emotional ecosystem, a place that actively holds the warmth, regulates your environment, and offers a deep sense of calm when the elements settle in outside. Comfort is felt rather than seen. It is the absence of a draft, the way afternoon light is captured to heat a solid mass floor or wall, and the feeling of being completely protected from the winter chill.

We like to design spaces that ensure that no matter how cold the landscape becomes, your internal world remains perfectly still, warm, and restorative.

A thoughtful home provides a supportive partner to an art collection, managing volume and light so that every piece can be enjoyed safely and clearly. For the collector, the technical details of the build are just as important as the aesthetic ones.⁠

When we work with large-scale sculpture or three-dimensional installations, we consider the mass and flow of the room from the very first plans. This might mean designing recessed, load-bearing plinths in stone or timber that lift the art to an optimal height, making it feel structurally part of the building rather than an afterthought. We also look at the physical requirements of the walls themselves. If you have extra-large canvases, we ensure there is solid timber framing and additional blocking at the right height so your work is secure.⁠

Light is the other critical factor. Protecting delicate prints or the rich pigments of an oil painting requires a precise approach to glazing and fixtures. We often use UV-filtering glass and specialized lighting aimed at a thirty-degree angle to highlight texture while avoiding the hot spots that can distract the eye. By incorporating hidden, automated solar shades into the architecture, we can protect the collection from the New Zealand sun without losing the connection to the landscape outside. It is about creating a space where the technical ex*****on serves the beauty of the work.⁠

This urban townhouse concept in Auckland demonstrates how thoughtful design can maximize a single site for multigenerational living. By shifting away from the traditional standalone home on a large site, we’ve crafted three separate residences that prioritize both individual privacy and collective connection. The design utilizes a shared central courtyard and outdoor areas to create a sense of openness, ensuring that while the homes are clustered, they never feel enclosed. It is an intentional response to the need for more efficient land use without sacrificing the spatial flow and materiality that makes a house feel like a home. We are currently on-site and look forward to seeing these structures take shape.
