Brass door hardware modelled on Conrad Hilton's own logo (a little easter egg for the hotel-philes out there), a side table inspired by a vintage fortune teller's, and a chandelier that looks like it's mid-bloom. The small stuff is my favourite part of any project.

Did you know New Zealand is home to the art deco capital of the world?! Earlier this month we took a road trip down to Napier, home of the most art deco buildings of any town worldwide. Because of a massive earthquake in 1931, most of the town was rebuilt, and people have put in so much work to be stewards of these amazing buildings ever since. I hate this word - it is cringe in a design school crit in the worst way - but the best way to describe it was that it is inspiring. So many colours, shapes, and decorative floral plaster elements that I wouldn’t even dream of trying to submit to a quantity surveyor nowadays.

I can’t believe I had never been before and already planning my next trip back!

Exposed rafters, a wood stove doing the heavy lifting of heating up a double height ceiling, and a table set for people to chat at for hours. The palette is grounded, timber, linen, worn brass, so the materials could do the talking.

This is the kind of interior that gets better with wear, not worse. Which is my favourite way to do it.

Hand-drawn walls, a rail of colour, layered textures against clean plaster. We leaned into pattern and proportion here rather than playing it safe.

Some of our favourite jobs are the ones where the client just says "go for it." This was one of them.

Aged mirror, velvet banquettes, plastered walls that catch the light differently every hour. Barbette was always going to be a little theatrical, so we made sure it stayed lived-in too.

This is what full-scope design gets you: knowing exactly how much drama a room can hold before it tips into a set.

Check out ya girl with some hot takes in this week! Thanks to their team for patiently listening to my rants about extremely-interesting-to-everyone things like acoustics, building spaces over time, and preserving vibes. A link to the article is in our bio.

Brass, original wood panelling, velvet, plaster ceiling, and a curtain doing double duty as both warmth and privacy. This is the Chelsea's lobby bar - new chandelier, original bones, textures we fought to keep rather than replace.

This is what full-scope design gets you: knowing which materials to restore, which to source, and which few to leave alone.

Small details from the Manaaki shopfront. We wove vintage, antiques, and found objects into the space: a korowai-like curtain, pounamu-toned paint, taonga standing in for a wardrobe: your nana's heirlooms, summer road trip op-shop finds, carved whakairo, earthy handmade pottery.

Less a luxury shopfront, more like the well designed flat of the coolest guy you know.
