Winstone Aggregates' Hunua Quarry has the green light to help keep Auckland building for decades to come.

The quarry expansion has been approved under the Fast-track Approvals Act, unlocking access to around 225 million tonnes of high-quality rock and an estimated 50 to 80 years of supply.

Already supplying almost 30% of Auckland’s aggregate, Hunua has helped shape the region’s roads, bridges and building foundations for around a century. This next chapter will keep essential construction materials close to the projects that need them.

It’s a significant milestone for Winstone Aggregates, our Heavy Building Materials Division, and Fletcher Building that will strengthen the long-term supply of locally sourced materials to support housing, infrastructure and the region’s growth.

Innovation, sustainability and regional growth were on display in Taupō as The Hon Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Minister and Local MP Louise Upston MP got a first peek at Laminex New Zealand's new Fine Strand Board (FSB) manufacturing facility ahead of the official opening.

Taupō’s new advanced manufacturing platform will turn NZ radiata pine into high-value, longer-life products for furniture, joinery and construction markets, replacing the old wood panel processing plan running since 1974

During the plant tour, alongside Fletcher Building CEO Andrew Reding, CE Light Building Products Hamish McBeath, Laminex GM Rachel Silcock, and Chief Public Affairs Officer Christian May, they experienced the full journey from log yard to finished board, seeing how wood fibre is transformed into high-performance products through a circular process where production waste is converted into biomass energy to help power the operation.

Once fully operational, the plant will process about 200,000 tonnes of pulp logs annually and support some 70 on-site jobs.

The new facility represents a significant investment in higher-value, onshore wood processing and highlights the opportunities ahead for New Zealand's forestry sector.

Today’s results reflect an important year of progress for Fletcher Building despite continued challenging market conditions across New Zealand and Australia.

The results reflect the work underway to simplify and strengthen the Group, sharpen our focus on manufacturing and distributing building products, and give our businesses greater ownership to make faster decisions closer to their customers and markets.

There’s more work ahead, but we enter FY27 with a stronger platform and a clear focus on continuing to execute our strategy, while positioning the Group to capture opportunities as our markets recover.

Sometimes good ideas simply start with a conversation, a fresh perspective and a willingness to ask, "Is there a better way?"

Damaged plasterboard from GIB®'s Auckland distribution centre is now getting a second life instead of heading for disposal, thanks to a lunchtime conversation that inspired an initiative focused on saving in more ways than one: saving waste, saving time, and saving money.

Rather than sending damaged plasterboard offsite for disposal, the team now returns recyclable board to Winstone Wallboards' Tauriko manufacturing site, where it's processed and transformed into raw material for new plasterboard.

In just two months, more than 32 tonnes of plasterboard has been diverted from disposal, returning recycled material to the manufacturing process.

It's a great example of how innovation comes from anyone, anywhere.

Congratulations to Nathan Marshall and the Auckland warehouse team for finding a solution that's delivering both environmental and commercial benefits.

Safety isn't just about procedures. It's about people, culture and the choices we make every day. Congratulations to the team at Winstone Aggregates' Ōtaika Quarry for taking home the top Safety Award at the 2026 QuarryNZ Conference, marking the fifth time the Northland operation has received this prestigious industry recognition.

The award recognises quarry operations that go beyond compliance to create a genuine culture of safety through workforce engagement, proactive risk management and continuous improvement.

Thornton Williams, Chief Executive Heavy Building Materials, said the award recognises the team's unwavering commitment to looking after one another.

"Safety isn't something that's added to the job, it's the way the job gets done. Every conversation, every decision and every action contributes to creating a workplace where everyone can go home safely at the end of the day."

The celebrations extended beyond the team award, with Luana Misa receiving the prestigious R.D. Hassed Memorial Trophy, while Ethan Stevens and the wider Ōtaika team were also recognised for their outstanding contribution to the industry.

Our business, Comfortech is now taking another step forward in lower‑impact manufacturing. Through a new partnership with Lodestone Energy, 100% of the electricity used at our Penrose site will be matched with renewable energy generated from Lodestone’s solar farms.

Comfortech General Manager Anthony Stone says the move is both operationally driven and future‑focused.

“Switching to solar‑backed energy strengthens our commitment to leading lower‑impact manufacturing in our industry and responds to growing demand for more sustainable building materials,” Anthony says.

Some careers at Fletcher Building are measured not just in years, but in legacy. General Manager David Thomas is a perfect example, marking an extraordinary 50 years with the business.

David joined Fletcher Timber in Rotorua in 1976 as a young accountant with a simple plan - stay a few years, gain some experience, then move on. Half a century later, he’s still here.

Over 50 years, he built a career across multiple Fletcher businesses including PlaceMakers, Laminex New Zealand and as General Manager of GIB® (Winstone Wallboards), taking on a wide range of roles and experiences along the way.

His journey is a great example of what’s possible at Fletcher Building, where there is opportunity to grow, move across industries, and build a long and varied career within one organisation. But, As David reflects, it’s ultimately the people who make the difference.

A crisp two-degree start didn’t deter 120 customers from gathering at PlaceMakers Riccarton to attend a trade breakfast alongside Prime Minister, The RT. Hon. Christopher Luxon on Friday.

Joined by National list MP Nancy Lu and Ilam MP Hamish Campbell, the Prime Minister gave a brief speech to the customers, who were invited by PlaceMakers Account Managers from across the city. He then took questions on issues affecting the construction sector, before chatting to the crowd one-on-one over bacon butties and coffee.

Christchurch Hub Manager Dale King, who oversees the city’s four PlaceMakers branches, said it was the first time a sitting Prime Minister had attended such an event. "I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to see the Prime Minister engaging with our customers on the issues that matter to them - including the opening of the new One New Zealand Stadium!"

High in the Southern Alps, a small hut is making a big impact. Two of our steel business, ColorCote and Dimond Roofing have partnered with the Backcountry Trust Aotearoa/New Zealand to rebuild Brass Monkey Hut, transforming a modest 1970s biv into a resilient, low-maintenance shelter for today’s trampers.

Built to withstand some of Aotearoa’s toughest conditions, the hut combines durable steel solutions with thoughtful design, including Dimond Corrugate roofing and flashings, ColorCote's pre painted steel, including ZinaCore™ roofing and cladding and MagnaFlow™ flashings.

From early sketches to helicopter lifts into remote alpine terrain, this project will ensure the hut can serve generations of back-country adventurers.
