Krishna Nand’s career in construction was not a planned destination. It was a path shaped by his dad Vega Nand, who has worked for Fletcher Construction for several decades. They’ve been fortunate to work on several projects together.

Krishna started with Fletcher Construction in 2012 as a machine operator, progressing to his current role of Senior Supervisor on the Eastway Busway Alliance (EBA) – and he is soon to lead his own project.

Career highlights include significant projects such as the Waikato Expressway, Waterview Tunnel and the EBA.

As Senior Supervisor, Krishna is focused on supporting and leading multiple teams across the five zones, with a strong focus on safety, productivity, and client satisfaction.

BPC’s team members who delivered the Ōmokoroa Water Treatment Plant Upgrade and Reservoir project for the Western Bay of Plenty Regional Council received high praise for their safety controls and strong outcomes at the Civil Contractors New Zealand Bay of Plenty Awards. The team won the Health & Safety Award, as well as being a finalist in the $5-20M project category.

The project, upgrading the live, bore-fed plant to meet modern standards and support the area’s future growth, was delivered while keeping existing plant fully operational. The judge praised the team for “genuinely developing and looking after people”. “They recorded more than 15,000 hours with zero LTIs and zero MTIs,” he said, “backed by daily coordination, Critical Control Verifications, leader walks, JSEAs, and systematic inspections.”

Another project delivered by BPC, the Pumpkin Hill SH25 Emergency Works Underslip Repairs project, was a finalist in the $1-5M project category at the Awards. It was part of the Coromandel Cyclone Recovery Contract, delivering six under-slip repairs along 4km of SH25, 5km north of Tairua. The project required swift contractor mobilisation to prevent further slippage and risk to SH25 and the public.

As the Eastern Busway moves closer to completion, the project is not just transforming how people travel through East Auckland. It’s also creating greener, more welcoming spaces along the way.

Between July and September, the Eastern Busway Alliance planted more than 1,300 native trees and 65,000 plants across the project area between Pakūranga and Botany.

The planting will support local biodiversity, enhance the urban landscape and create attractive spaces for the community to enjoy.

More planting is planned next season along the final section of the busway between Whakamaumahara Guys Reserve and Botany Town Centre.

BPC Health & Safety Manager Jay Lauten has embedded best-practice safety protocols in high-compliance construction environments for 25 years. He’s brought his passion for building a strong safety culture to airfields, tunnelling, and major civil infrastructure projects, developing initiatives and implementing changes that have driven significant performance improvements.

Area Health & Safety Manager Natalie Griffiths says Jay has made a lasting contribution across some of New Zealand’s most complex infrastructure projects, from the Waterview Connection to the fast-paced delivery of the Waikato 50 project during Auckland’s drought response. “Jay’s current contribution at Auckland Airport has been equally significant, building strong relationships and helping establish a trusted partnership,” Natalie says. “While all this experience speaks for itself, it's Jay’s ability to inspire, motivate, and genuinely connect with people that sets him apart.”

Since returning from London almost a decade ago, Brendan Attewell has been passionate about teaching, promoting and improving temporary works management at Fletcher Construction and across New Zealand.

“The challenge with temporary works is that the field is incredibly broad. It’s so broad that temporary works coordinators are unlikely to have experience with every type of temporary works they need to manage.

“Training project teams to understand temporary works is critical to safe, efficient and high-quality delivery. Temporary works management shouldn’t fall to just a few people – it’s everyone’s responsibility.”

He addressed this gap by developing a one-day risk awareness course through Engineering New Zealand and Engineering Education Australia.

As Engineering Services and Innovation Manager for Fletcher Construction, Brendan gives all projects access to in-house technical services, enabling project teams to build with confidence through expert advice.

Two new raised intersections on the Eastern Busway will support safer journeys and a more accessible transport network when the busway opens next year.

The first intersection at Tī Rākau Drive, Palm Avenue and Aylesbury Street is now complete, with the second at Tī Rākau Drive, Gossamer Drive and Fremantle Place due for completion in November.

Located at key crossing points, the intersections will help people safely connect with the Pakūranga and Koata (near Riverhills) bus stations, as well as nearby schools, businesses, and community facilities.

For drivers, the impact will be minimal, with journey times expected to increase by just three seconds.

Raised by 75 mm, approximately half the height of a standard kerb, the intersections will help lower vehicle speeds, improve the visibility of pedestrians and cyclists, and make it easier for people using wheelchairs or strollers, and those with visual impairments, to travel through the area.

Progress on the Eastern Busway continues, with a third left-turn lane opening on Pakūranga Road in August to increase capacity and improve traffic flow through the intersection.

Auckland Transport Operations Centre (ATOC) has also refined signal timings to better match traffic demand, including more green time for the Rā Hihi flyover.

TomTom travel time data shows faster journeys on key routes between Carbine Road, Glenmore Road and Panmure, with the greatest improvement recorded on the Rā Hihi route.

These gains reflect the benefits of the new road layout and ongoing optimisation by the ATOC, including signal phasing and coordination improvements.

Together, these changes are helping deliver smoother, more reliable journeys for people travelling through Pakūranga.

Construction has given Merab Wilson exactly what she was looking for in a career: purpose, challenge, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

It has also given her the chance to solve complex problems while contributing to projects that will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Merab said seeing projects come to life and having a tangible reference for her work is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

As Project Controls Manager for the Te Awa Kairangi Alliance, delivering the SH2 Melling Transport Improvements for NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, Merab’s turns complicated project information into practical insights that teams can use to make informed decisions.

Alongside her role, Merab is a passionate advocate for women in construction and creating leadership pathways for future generations. As divisional committee chair of Fletcher Construction’s Women in Construction group, she is helping foster stronger connections, champion inclusion, and support a more diverse industry.

Some of our Women in Construction network recently came together at our Penrose Campus for something a little different — learning how to become facilitators for the Bridges to Schools programme.

Bridges to Schools (https://ow.ly/1Hu350ZMkrj) is a fantastic hands-on programme that gives young people the opportunity to experience engineering in action — working together to build a bridge while learning some of the principles behind how and why it works.

For our women, though, this session was about more than learning how to deliver the programme.

It was about giving more of our women the confidence and tools to take Bridges to Schools into their own local communities and schools — and to be visible examples of the many different careers available across construction and infrastructure.

When we talk to young people about our industry, it’s important they see that construction isn’t just one job or one career pathway. Our industry needs engineers, project managers, supervisors, commercial professionals, safety advisors, designers, planners, quality specialists, environmental professionals and so many others.

And for young girls in particular, there is something powerful about seeing women standing in front of them saying, “This is what I do, and you could do it too.”

A big thank you to all the women who got involved, had a go, asked questions and stepped outside their comfort zones to learn how to lead these sessions.

We’re looking forward to seeing where they take the bridge next — and hopefully inspiring a few future engineers and construction leaders along the way.

BPC’s excellence in marine works and environmental protection was showcased at the recent Asia-Pacific conference of the World Association of Waterborne Transport Infrastructure (PIANC), held in Brisbane. The biennial event, attended by 450 people from 20 countries, focussed on Working with Nature.

BPC Site Engineer Rhys Winter presented a paper on the Matiu Somes Island Wharf Replacement Project, delivered on a predator-free island in Wellington harbour. Co-written with Pre-Contracts Manager Alex Normandeau, the paper discussed the strict biosecurity controls required on the island, working around Korora (Little Blue Penguins), and low impact marine piling methods. Rhys talked about the logistics during the construction phase of the project, including biosecurity and penguin checks each morning, marine mammal observations, and sharing barges between projects.

“Through proactive planning and strong collaboration with our client, we were able to leave Somes Island the way we found it, although with a safer, more resilient wharf,” the paper concluded.
