Congratulations to BPC Estimator Rebecca Staples, selected as a finalist for the 2026 Z Energy Personal Improvement Award to be announced at next month’s Civil Contractors New Zealand Conference.

Since joining BPC as an Estimation Administrator in 2016, Rebecca has consistently sought opportunities to expand her capabilities and contribution to the business.

The judges said Rebecca’s career epitomises the power of determination and continuous self-improvement in the civil construction industry. “Over the past decade of hard work and dedication, Rebecca has risen steadily through the ranks to become one of BPC’s most respected senior Ground Engineering Estimators. With her rigorous, all-in approach to success, Rebecca has become an outstanding civil construction professional.”

We’re proud to see BPC’s Central Region Works Manager Mike Clayton honoured at the Civil Contractors New Zealand Waikato Awards as Outstanding Individual of the Year.

A highly respected member of BPC’s team and the wider civil contractor community, Mike is committed to supporting others to succeed. This was reflected in the judges’ comments.

“In the last seven years of judging the people’s awards, Michael has each year without fail been credited as being the mentor and coach who has guided awardees to the point where they have gained their own recognition,” the judges said. “From starting in the industry as a labourer to becoming now a Works Manager, he is much more than just what his role entails. He is a mentor, a coach, a counsellor, a trainer, an assessor, a fundraiser, and a cheerleader. He serves on numerous committees, and industry support organisations. But above all of that he is someone who takes immense pride in his family. They are his purpose in life.”

We’re proud of our Central Region team winners of the $5M - $10M projects category of the Civil Contractors New Zealand Waikato Awards for the military vehicle cleaning station they constructed on behalf of the New Zealand Defence Force in the Waiouru Military Camp.

The judges said BPC’s team “identified the high-risk aspects of the Waiouru Wash Point Project and applied mitigating measures - 3D excavator imaging, GPR, hydrovac, and robust onsite management”.

“This focus on meeting construction challenges with effective communication and solutions provided the client successful outcomes, highlighted by the extremely high 96% client satisfaction in their Exit Interview, worthy of this CAT 3 Award for 2026.”

The project involved constructing two separate manual wash areas to service large military plant, such as tanks, plus an automated wash system for light vehicles. The project enhanced operational needs during peak times while minimising water usage and environmental impacts.

The impressive work of BPC’s Central Region team repairing major storm damage to SH2 Karangahake Gorge was celebrated at the Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ) Waikato Awards with a win in Category 2 – projects of $1M - $5M.

The judges said significant damage to SH2 Karangahake Gorge required a rapid response by NZTA to reinstate this vital link and “BPC responded by establishing the resources and skills to deliver these works in a high risk, high traffic, and river environment”.

“The client was impressed by the high quality and pace of the project, which included additional slips all completed within the tight three-month project, allowing SH2 to fully open for traffic on time.”

What better way to learn about what BPC is delivering for CentrePort than from a ferry on Wellington harbour. As part of our sponsorship of this year’s Wellington region Girls in Infrastructure event, we gave senior secondary school students an uninterrupted view of BPC’s work on the Cook Strait Ferry Replacement Programme along with the daily operations at the port.

We’re proud to support Girls in Infrastructure events, promoting awareness of the wide range of career opportunities in the infrastructure industry to students in year 12 and 13.

As well as the ferry ride, the girls had the opportunity to interact with heavy machinery and construction technology, chat to education providers, and meet people working across the industry. Operating our remote-controlled trench compactor proved particularly popular.

The Eastern Busway Alliance is helping lead the way in sustainable infrastructure, with a first for Auckland Transport.

We’re now using aggregate sourced from hydro excavation, a solution that reduces heavy truck movements on our roads and avoids the need to extract new materials. Our custom F2 drainage aggregate is produced locally at a plant that recycles all its water, supporting smarter use of resources from start to finish.

This initiative has been in the works since early 2024, and getting it across the line reflects the team’s persistence. Throughout the process, we’ve carried out thorough checks to make sure the material meets the high standards needed for civil works.

It’s a practical step forward, and a strong example of how we can move towards a more circular economy in New Zealand construction.

The Eastern Busway is delivered by an alliance of Auckland Transport with Fletcher Construction, ACCIONA, AECOM, and Jacobs, in partnership with mana whenua.

BPC’s General Manager Andrew Burgess joined NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, Ashburton District Council, mana whenua, and the local community to break ground on the Second Ashburton Bridge project.

We’ve worked alongside our clients and designers during the Early Contractor Involvement stage to conduct detailed constructability reviews, refined staging to minimise disruption, and identified opportunities to simplify the design and reduce temporary works. Early procurement and early geotechnical investigations have helped lock in programme certainty and keep the project moving at pace. “It’s the kind of early thinking that sets the project up for success long before construction begins,” Andrew says.

Since late last year, our team from across BPC, Fletcher Construction, and Higgins has been on site completing early works and working with local sub-contractors to begin pre-fabricating essential bridge elements.

The project will deliver a new bridge across the Ashburton River Hakatere, safer intersections, a walking and cycling link, and a new 1.6km watermain to support future growth. It’s a significant investment in resilience for Canterbury and the wider South Island and BPC is proud to be helping to make it possible.
