🏡 MGI is officially manifesting a Modern Cottage Inspired Lake House (with a little help from Pinterest of course!) ✨

Wondering how we interpret Modern Cottage? Think traditional architecture and nostalgia, edited through a cleaner, more sophisticated lens.

For a Lake of the Ozarks version, we lean into the 1990s - vaulted ceilings, wood windows, stone fireplaces, millwork, stripes and patterns, that comfy upholstered furniture you remember.

You know the house. The one Dr. Leo Marvin stole right out from under that cute couple on Lake Winnipesaukee. 🛶

Collected, comfortable, timeless - and still very much at home at the lake.

We KNOW someone out there wants to make this happen with us!? 🙌

If this feels like your dream lake house too, we should probably talk.

At Alona Point, there are a lot of details we love, but the mix is what makes it work.

The warm wood, the stone, the black-framed windows, the oversized lighting, the cleaner white cabinetry... none of it is trying to match perfectly, and that’s kind of the point.

We wanted the house to feel polished, but still relaxed enough for real lake life. Beautiful materials, strong contrast, and rooms that feel finished without feeling fussy.

And yes, we’re still obsessed with that stone. 🤎

Happy Labor Day. 🙌

This is the part of a project where it starts getting really fun.

For this primary bath, I wanted the bigger pieces to stay warm and quiet, then bring in just enough contrast through the dark plumbing, wood cabinetry, brass details, and art so it didn’t feel too expected.

I’m always thinking about the whole room at this stage. The vanity can be beautiful on its own, but it still has to make sense with the countertop, mirrors, rug, paint, lighting, and everything else happening around it.

And yes, I will absolutely spend an unreasonable amount of time deciding which piece of art belongs over the commode. 😅

Benjamin Moore went deep for 2026, and I’m into it. 🙌

Silhouette AF-655 sits in that really good place between espresso and charcoal. It has enough depth to make a room feel dramatic, but it’s softer and warmer than going straight black. Benjamin Moore describes it as a blend of rich espresso with charcoal notes, inspired by the look of classic tailored suiting.

I’d love to see it in a dining room, office, bedroom, built-ins, or anywhere you want a little more mood. Pair it with lighter stone, warm wood, linen, brass, or creamy whites and it gets really good.

Would you paint an entire room in Silhouette, or use it in smaller doses?

We spent part of yesterday laying out rug samples for a client, and this is exactly why I like seeing them next to the actual finishes before making a decision.

Against this warm wood floor, some pulled cooler, some warmer, and a few that looked almost identical on their own suddenly felt completely different once we laid them all out.

These are from , and I already have a couple I keep coming back to.

Which one would you choose with this wood floor?

I’m always looking for the detail that keeps a room from feeling too safe.

Here, it’s the contrast. Crisp white cabinetry against the deeper island, warm brass, that graphic backsplash, and lighting with enough shape to hold its own. None of it feels overly matched, but it all belongs in the same conversation.

That little bit of tension is what gives a space personality. 🥂

A before + after like this is such a good reminder that you don’t always have to start from scratch to make a room feel completely new.

The bones of the space were already there. The change came from editing the heavier pieces, lightening the palette, softening the bed, and choosing layers that made the room feel calmer and more current. 🛏️

Same bedroom. Much lighter feel, better balance, and a completely different mood.

Some of the most expensive design mistakes happen before the room ever starts looking finished.

A cabinet layout gets locked in before the furniture plan is considered. A beautiful tile gets ordered before anyone thinks about what it needs to sit next to. Lighting goes in, and later you realize the scale is completely wrong for the room.

I like getting involved early enough to look at the whole picture before those decisions start stacking up. 📐

New build, renovation, or a furnishing project, the goal is to make the process feel a lot less like guessing and a lot more like knowing where we’re headed.

One of my favorite things about a dining space is how much personality you can give it without adding a lot.

A chair with a great shape. A pedestal table. A finish with some warmth to it. Something sculptural overhead. Those are the pieces that make a room feel collected instead of simply furnished.

I’m always looking for that balance between polished and relaxed. I want the room to look beautiful when it’s empty, but feel even better when the chairs are pulled out, the table is full, and everyone stays a little longer than they planned. 🍷
