⭐️Plant Spotlight: Penstemon!
Penstemon is a great perennial for sunny areas. We like it planted in masses for the best impact.

The variety shown in this bed at our shop is called Dakota Burgundy. We used to carry it in our nursery, but changed to a newer variety over the last couple years called Midnight Masquerade. Midnight Masquerade is slightly shorter and has lavender-pink blooms which we prefer to Dakota Burgundy's pinkish-white flowers.

Both variatieties have dark burgundy foliage and are semi-evergreen, so the foliage may retain some color in winter. Once the flowers finish blooming, they can be cut back, or the flower stalks may be left up to provide an vertical accent in the landscape. When left up, they will develop seed clusters which may reseed nearby, although not in an invasive type of way. They will not rebloom.

Penstemon is a reliable and hardy perennial and one of our top picks for hot and sunny spots in the landscape!

Lakehouse retaining wall project we started last year.
This year's additions include more plants, flagstone stepping stones, stone edging, and another small wall at the bottom.

Notice how the edging and flagstone pieces are a mixture of 3-4 different colors? Who says you have to pick just one color?! We love this mix and match look to give a more colorful effect! 🌿

Our seasonal color crew has been busy planting lots of containers and bedding plants over the last couple of weeks. This year's crew consisted of our maintenance Team Lead, Truman, our Landscape Designer, Kat, and our Property and Nursery Coordinator, JeriLee.

My all-time favorite Peony, 'Buckeye Belle', is in full bloom right now and looks incredible! Remember when Peonies bloomed around Memorial Day? Unfortunately this variety was discontinued from our Monrovia grower so we can't get them anymore. If you have some, enjoy them! Best true dark red colored Peony I've ever found.

We found this big beautiful bloom of Slime Mold in the nursery today, likely due to having recently started our irrigation system back up for the incoming plants.

If you see this vomit-looking stuff appear in your mulch beds, don't fret. Here are some fun facts about Slime Mold....

• Slime mold may look like something from another planet, but it’s completely harmless to people, pets, and plants.
• It’s not actually a mold — it’s a fascinating organism that behaves more like a giant single cell!
• Slime mold thrives on moisture and feeds on decaying organic matter like mulch and dead leaves.
• It often appears overnight after rain or humid weather and usually disappears on its own in a few days.
• Some slime molds can actually “move” slowly to find food. Nature is weird and amazing.
• Scientists study slime mold because it can solve mazes and find efficient pathways — without having a brain!
• The bright yellow kind is sometimes nicknamed “dog vomit slime mold” because… well… look at it. 😂
• Even though it looks gross, slime mold is part of a healthy ecosystem and helps break down organic material.

Every person who comes to work at Land Escapes Inc. has an impact. They become part of my family, and part of our journey, our story, whether they're with us for a week, a season, a year, multiple years, or a lifetime. They are ALL important.

At the start of each season we ask them to make their mark, literally, on the doors of our storage container. They can sign their name, draw a picture, or write something meaningful to them.

Over the years, some of the writing fades. For those who stick with us, they update it periodically to keep it fresh. For those who move on, their words eventually disappear. But all of them are important. A moment in time where they were...or are...part of something special. All marked on the doors with a paint marker. ❤️🌿
