COMING UP IN NOVEMBER

November is packed to the brim. Starting tonight with our monthly AI Meet-Up, an open conversation on what’s emerging and what’s actually working. An opportunity to chat with Milford Asset Management KiwiSaver Financial Advisers, who will be discussing topics like the importance of setting financial goals. Terra Sancta w**e returns for their second Tasting Session, pouring estate whites, rosé and single-block Pinot Noirs from some of the oldest vines in Bannockburn.

At Five Mile, we head across to The Crown for a Members Lunch, an easy midday catch-up with fellow members. Then akitu brings their range of w**es to the club for a Tasting Session, They focus on one variety and holds w**es back for over a decade before release, and the rare Arête w**es are in the line-up.

The AI Series Workshop continues with James Bayly’s second session for technical practitioners, a small-group deep dive into agentic coding. We’re excited for an afternoon bike ride at 7 Mile, followed by a BBQ at Wilson Bay to enjoy the long days and the start of summer. After Hours: Salsa & Margs returns, a social night of beginner salsa, bachata and margaritas, with time to dance once the lesson’s done.

Our November Industry Leaders is Queenstown on the MICHELIN Map, with Paul Froggatt of essence by ROKI Collection, Sun Peng of Amisfield Restaurant and Chris Scott of Sherwood. They’ll talk about what the recognition has meant for them, the role of local produce, and what it means for hospitality in Queenstown.

December 11th, our End of Year Members Party is back at Sundays, a relaxed afternoon to celebrate another year of Mountain Club and the people who make it what it is. Saxylady and Santelle Dawn are on the decks with groovy tunes and live saxophone, and there’ll be drinks, lawn games, wood-fired pizza and the Mountain Club Community Raffle.

Reform Queenstown Pilates keeps its weekly rhythm at the club, Wednesdays still belong to the sauna at Watershed Saunas, and Thursday mornings mean mountain biking at Coronet Peak.

The past fortnight at Mountain Club.

It started on the course at the Wakatipu High School Foundation Golf Day, followed by the Spirit of the Whakatipu Gala.

Back at Beach Street, Brannigans’s Club welcomed James Stevenson-Wallace, the new Chief Executive of Queenstown Lakes District Council. James shared a bit about his background, then spent the evening meeting members, local business owners and community leaders.

On Wednesday morning at Five Mile, James Bayly started his AI-Native Technical Practitioners series with a small group of engineers and tech leads. The first session covered spec, design and early verification. Mora W**es & Artisan Kitchen ran a tasting at Beach Street, and the Five Mile Centre Queenstown After Hours Night Market came back for its second year, bringing food, retail and plenty of people through the precinct.

Then it was Labour Weekend. On Saturday night members got a first look at Mental Landscapes, CABNOV’s first New Zealand solo exhibition, at The Arts Hole’s collector preview. Followed by an extra day off to spend with friends and family.

Alongside it all, sauna at Watershed Saunas, Reform Pilates and Thursday morning laps of Hot Rod kept the week full of wellness.

A reminder of the place we get to call home.

For a lot of us, work and play overlap here in Queenstown. You close the laptop for the day and the lake is waiting, the trails are calling and the mountains are ready to be explored.

Happy Labour Day from Mountain Club, however you’re spending it.

Brad Rowe recently pulled us aside to share some feedback on the value he’s been finding in Mountain Club.

Just last week, he decided at the last minute to come along to our weekly wellness session at WATERSHED SAUNAS . He turned up not knowing who was booked on, and ended up connecting with an old friend while sitting and getting to know the others. That then turned into everyone heading back to Beach Street to carry on the conversation.

Brad is one of our longest-standing members, and it means a lot to hear first hand how Mountain Club continues to strengthen his relationships and connect him with the wider community.

In our latest Mountain Club Podcast episode, Paddy Kluts sits down with Christina Grant, founder of Perriam, who has just walked away from 10 years in Wanaka to go all in on Tarras and the merino shop her mum ran for more than 30 years.

Christina grew up on Bendigo Station, where her father co-founded the New Zealand Merino Company, and spent her afternoons in her mum’s shop. From there it was a creative awakening at fashion school in Wellington, the Italian wool mills and London, before coming home to care for her mum in her final months. She explains why Perriam designs nothing too trend-driven, and why she couldn’t bring herself to manufacture offshore even though it would be cheaper. She also talks about how an ADHD diagnosis at 47 changed how she sees the hyperfocus and burnout of her 20s and 30s, and why she now calls it her superpower, crediting it with much of what she’s built.

Thank you Christina for sharing so openly, and for coming back after our Future of Fashion panel. This is a warm, reflective listen on merino, motherhood, and coming home.

A big thank you to Alex Tong, Founder of Wolf Coffee Roasters, Liv King, Founder of Liv King, and Pete Fullerton-Smith, director of AquaWatch for sharing their business journeys at our Entrepreneur Coffee Jam with Startup Queenstown Lakes, moderated by Billy Waller.

A little recap from each speaker:

Alex - Wolf has grown from roasting 100 kilos a week to 1.7 tonnes, and from one wholesale account to more than 40. He puts it down to the pack mentality: treating staff, customers and the local community like family. That approach is carried through to his upcoming new roastery, cafe and training space in Queenstown, which will be the model for its expansion into China.

Liv king - Liv moved from prosthetics for film and TV into luxury wedding makeup, and 90% of her clients now come from overseas, often booking one to two years ahead. She puts her growth down to collaboration over competition, building referral relationships with planners and photographers and local make up artists. That approach now shapes how she runs the business, with extensive pre day booklets for every stage and ensuring her pricing covers the admin, and extra touchpoints behind each booking.

Peter Fullerton-Smith - Aquawatch started as a New Zealand farming family’s answer to a degrading river and now has a team of 20 building real-time water quality sensors. Pete puts its progress down to finding where the product is a painkiller rather than a vitamin. It was nice to have in New Zealand, but it’s essential in the UK, where legislation requires water utilities to monitor their discharge points. That focus is now taking Aquawatch into the UK, with a factory being set up there and a major contract close to signing.

The Entrepreneur Coffee Jam is a fantastic collaboration with Startup Queenstown Lakes, and our next one is on 3 December. We look forward to hearing from more founders then.
