Big news for farm workers and rural Kiwis 👏
If your job comes with housing - like working on a farm or living in school accommodation - buying your first home has often felt almost impossible using KiwiSaver.
The current rules say you have to move into the home you buy straight away to use your KiwiSaver first home withdrawal. But for many rural workers, that just doesn’t work when your accommodation is tied to your job.
The good news?
The Government has announced plans to change the rules so people in work-provided accommodation may still be able to use their KiwiSaver to buy their first home - even if they can’t move into it immediately.
That could mean finally getting your foot on the property ladder while still keeping the convenience of work accommodation. It may also open the door to renting the home out initially, building equity, and getting ahead sooner rather than waiting until your living situation changes.
The changes are expected around mid-2026, so nothing is official just yet, but it’s a really positive step forward for rural New Zealand.
If owning your own home has felt out of reach, now could be a great time to start planning ahead and growing your KiwiSaver. And if you’ve been thinking about building your first home, we’d love to help you understand your options and what might be possible.
