A pool is more than a pool.

When designing a garden with a pool, the pool needs to be considered as part of the bigger picture — how the space will be used, how people move through it, where you’ll sit and entertain, the planting, screening and, most importantly, the proportions of the garden as a whole.

The goal isn’t simply to fit a pool into the available space. It’s to create a garden where the pool feels like it was always meant to be there.

Good garden design is about seeing the whole picture.

A beautiful garden doesn’t happen by accident. 🌿

It’s easy to look at a finished garden and see the plants, the paving, the pots and the beautiful details.

But there’s a lot of thinking that happens before any of those things are chosen.

How will the garden be used?
What does the site allow us to do?
Where is the sun? Where does the wind come from?
How will the garden connect with the architecture and the spaces inside the home?
And, perhaps most importantly, how will it feel to live in?

After 26 years of designing gardens, I’ve learnt that the best gardens aren’t necessarily the ones with the most plants or the biggest budgets.

They’re the ones where everything has been considered.

A beautiful garden doesn’t happen by accident.

It’s easy to look at a finished garden and see the plants, the paving, the pots and the beautiful details.

It’s also about listening, communicating, understanding what matters to each client and guiding them through the process.

Because when someone invites you into their home and trusts you with their garden, they’re trusting you with much more than the design.

The experience matters too.

Three years on, this coastal garden overlooking the breathtaking Kaipara Harbour, north of Auckland, has truly come into its own.

Designed to withstand the challenging coastal conditions of wind, salt and intense sun, the carefully selected palette of hardy, resilient plants has matured beautifully, creating a landscape that feels both natural and refined.

The planting complements the clean architectural lines of the home while softening its edges, allowing the garden and the spectacular harbour setting to work together in harmony. It’s incredibly rewarding to revisit a project years later and see the vision fully realised—proof that thoughtful design and the right plants only get better with time.
