Designing for Connection: a mini-series on architecture that brings people together.
So what actually makes a space feel connected? Here are three strategies we return to again and again:
1. Shared spaces with purpose Communal areas work best when they're centrally located, appropriately scaled, and designed with comfort and acoustics in mind. Think: the inviting lounge that people actually want to sit in.
2. Thresholds and transitions Entrances, corridors, verandas, these in-between spaces are often where the magic happens. Slow people down, and you create opportunities for interaction.
3. Outdoor integration In New Zealand, our connection to the outdoors is part of our identity. Sheltered outdoor areas, blurred inside/outside boundaries, and landscaping that supports gathering, these aren't extras, they're essentials.
Great design doesn't force connection. It creates the conditions for it.
