Residents in Trinity Park, Smithfield and Yorkeys K**b may notice temporary water discolouration as Cairns Regional Council implements contingency measures to maintain drinking water supply.

Heavy overnight rainfall caused the Freshwater Water Treatment Plant to pause operations at about 1am. The region is currently relying on water stored in reservoirs.

Council has declared Level 4 water restrictions, which limit water use to essential needs only โ€” drinking, cooking and bathing.

To extend supply, water stored in a reservoir at Kewarra Beach will be pumped back into the network. Changes to the normal flow of water can sometimes cause temporary discolouration.

โœ… The water remains safe to drink and is being regularly monitored to ensure it meets strict health standards.
Council will notify residents if there are any health concerns.
