Residents in Trinity Park, Smithfield and Yorkeys K**b may notice temporary water discolouration as Cairns Regional Council implements contingency measures to maintain drinking water supply.

Heavy overnight rainfall caused the Freshwater Water Treatment Plant to pause operations at about 1am. The region is currently relying on water stored in reservoirs.

Council has declared Level 4 water restrictions, which limit water use to essential needs only — drinking, cooking and bathing.

To extend supply, water stored in a reservoir at Kewarra Beach will be pumped back into the network. Changes to the normal flow of water can sometimes cause temporary discolouration.

✅ The water remains safe to drink and is being regularly monitored to ensure it meets strict health standards.
Council will notify residents if there are any health concerns.

Limit your water use to what is needed for your health and hygiene.
If your water is ever disrupted, keep a store of drinking water and save rainwater, collect shower water or use pool water for toilets.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩!

Earlier this week we asked you to help us by conserving water, and you came to the party, with a significant reduction (almost 20%) of water use over the past few days … and that was before today’s rain.
Well done!

As we head into the weekend, we still need residents to conserve water as we work to rectify the ongoing issue of discoloured water from some parts of Cairns.
We are aware this is affecting residents mainly in Brinsmead, Whitfield, Edge Hill, Redlynch, Stratford, Freshwater, and Kamerunga, and we have some reports from Cairns North, Westcourt, Manoora, Mooroobool, Earlville, Smithfield, and Trinity Beach.

However, this is a changing situation, and other suburbs may be affected.
Council is monitoring this issue, which is related to ongoing maintenance at water reservoirs, high usage, and hot temperatures.
To assist us manage the water supply, users are requested to use water for essential use only.

We can confirm we are testing the water and the quality remains at regulated drinking quality standards and there is no concern for public health.
The notice to conserve water is likely to remain in place for another week.
We understand this is not the standard our residents should expect, and Council apologises for any inconvenience.

We will advise when further information is available.
