Hwange Local Board, officially still known as Whange Local Board, was founded in 1974. The local authority was created by statute under the body of the Urban Councils Act, Chapter 29:15. It is located in a mining area, surrounded by various mining giants. Hwange has direct road and rail links with all the other major urban centers as well as the neighboring countries of Botswana, South Africa, Zambia and Mozambique and Mozambique. The covers a total land area of 26 113 hectares and has a population of over 100 000 people.
