A Recent Design by Fides Design Studio

One of our most recent designs, a contemporary home set on a sloping site, creates a welcoming approach with direct access to the garage from the entrance gate.

A combination of natural stone, brick, timber and neutral finishes brings warmth and character to the home, creating a contemporary space that still feels inviting and warm.

The living spaces are oriented towards the north, allowing the design to make use of the sun for passive solar gain while also taking advantage of the surrounding views.

Every element comes together to respond to the site, the climate and the experience of living in the home.

Because a beautiful home is not just about how it looks. It is about how the design works for the people who live in it.

Comfort Isn't One Decision

A comfortable home created by a collection of decisions.

It begins with how the home meets the sun.

Then the floor beneath your feet.
The walls around you.
The windows that bring in light and air.
The doors that act as portals between spaces.
The roof above you.

Each decision quietly affects the next.

Together, they shape how a home feels, performs, and is experienced every day.

But comfort doesn't look the same for everyone.

Good design brings these decisions together around the way you want to live.

Comfort isn't something added to a home.

It is something designed around you.

What Happens Above Your Ceiling?

You may never see it.

But the space above your ceiling can affect how your home feels below it.

As the roof heats up during the day, heat can build up above the ceiling.

Ventilation can help that hot air escape, while roof insulation can slow heat from reaching the rooms below—and even help reduce noise from outside.

A space you barely notice.

Yet it can quietly change the comfort of the rooms you live in every day.

Sometimes, good design considers the spaces you never see, for your home's comfort

What If Your Roof Could Control How Your Home Feels?

Not just protect you from rain.

Not just provide shade.

That extra edge of the roof extending beyond the walls—an overhang—can do much more than you might think.

It can be designed to keep harsh summer sun out, allow softer winter sun in during cold days, and move rainwater away from the walls to reduce deteriation.

It may look like a small detail.

But that small detail can change the comfort and performance of your entire home.

Sometimes, good design is hiding in plain sight.

You may not think about the importance of roof very often in a building🏡

But every day, it is quietly working for you.

-It stands between your home and the heat of the afternoon sun.
-It shelters you when the rain comes.
-It can help keep the rooms below cooler, warmer and more comfortable.

And when rain falls heavily, the roof can even change how peaceful the home feels inside.

But a roof also gives a home its character.

-A low roof can make a home feel grounded and intimate.
-A higher roof can make a space feel open and generous.

These are things we may only notice as a feeling inside a home.

Yet they begin with decisions made during design, according to your preferences.

A roof doesn't just cover a home,

It quietly protects the moments that happen underneath it, the mornings, the conversations, the quiet evenings, and the memories made over time.

A Window Can Change How a Room Is Experienced🏡

The same room can feel completely different depending on the window.

A carefully positioned window can bring soft natural light into a space, warm it with the morning sun, or protect it from harsh afternoon heat.

It can frame a view that you look forward to every day.

It can connect a living space to a garden, a courtyard, or the life happening outside.

And sometimes, simply being able to see outside makes a room feel more open, calm and connected.

That is why windows are more than openings in a wall.

Their size, position and direction can influence the light, temperature, views and atmosphere of a space—and ultimately how you experience it.

The right window isn't just chosen for how it looks.

It is designed around how you want the room to feel and how you want to live in it.

Fresh Air Can Be Designed

Ever opened a window to let in fresh air, only to find that the room still feels stuffy?

Sometimes, the problem isn't the window itself.

It is where the windows are placed and how they work together.

Windows positioned on different sides of a room can create a path for air to move through the space, rather than simply entering and stopping.

Higher openings can also help warm air escape, drawing fresher air in through lower openings.

These are simple design decisions, but they can make a noticeable difference to how a room feels throughout the day.

In the right conditions, good natural ventilation can reduce the need to rely on air conditioning, making a home more comfortable while potentially reducing energy use.

The aim isn't just to give a home more windows.

It is to position and size them to work with the space, the climate and the way you live.

Fresh air doesn't always have to be added. Sometimes, it can be designed in.

Windows Do More Than Let In Light

Have you ever had a room that gets plenty of sunlight, but still doesn't feel comfortable?

Sometimes the problem isn't the amount of light.

A window can affect how much heat enters a room, how easily fresh air moves through it, how private the space feels, and even how comfortable it is at different times of the day.

That means a good window isn't simply one that looks beautiful or makes a room brighter.

Its size, position and type should respond to the space, the climate and how you intend to use it.

Because the same window that makes a living room bright and welcoming may not be the best choice for a bedroom that needs to stay cooler and more private.

During design we don't just ask where to put a window, but what the window needs to do for you.

Ever noticed how a room exposed to strong afternoon sun can become too hot to stay in?

One way we can respond to this during the design of your home is by introducing a cavity wall.

Instead of having one solid layer, a cavity wall creates a space between two layers of wall. This separation can help slow the movement of heat from the outside towards the inside.

It is not the only solution.

But it is one of the options available when designing a home for its climate, orientation and the way the spaces will be used.

Client oriented design is about choosing the right solution for the they want to live.
