NOVEMBER. What to do in the garden this month. Plant up shaded areas of the garden with suitable plants for a colourful summer show. Check for snail activity on all new growth and apply bait where necessary.

Summer and autumn flowering bulbs are ready for planting now. Bulbous plants:- Achimenes, arum, dahlia, gladiolus, galtonia, gloxinia, hippeastrum, lilium, nerine, scilla, tuberose, zephyranthes.

Feed flowering annuals regularly with a water-soluable fertiliser high in potassium, especially after persistent rainfall.

Summer seedlings :- Aster, ageratum, begonia, celosia, chrysanthemum, cleome, cosmos, dahlia (bedding) dianthus, gloriosa daisy, impatiens, lobelia, marigold, nicotiana, penstemon, petunia, portulaca, salvia, vinca.

Do any necessary shaping and cutting back of spring-flowering shrubs after flowering so they can build healthy new growth. To encourage new growth, apply a general fertiliser, dig in lightly and give a deep watering and generous spread of mulch around the root area.
Cut back centre spikes on delphiniums and foxgloves to just below the old flowers when they have finished flowering. This encourages secondary shorter side shoots to develop.
Cut back pointsettias to promote side branching.

OCTOBER. What to do in the garden this month. Spread a general fertiliser like 3:1:5 (26) SR on shrubs, climbers and flowerbeds and water in thoroughly. Cut back old growth on arums and cannas, fork in manure and compost, and water thoroughly. Chrysanthemums that are sending out new growth should be pinched back to encourage side shoots and bushy growth. Even though this is the beginning of our rainy season, it is important to become more conscious of ways to conserve water wherever possible. Mulching reduces evaporation and the need for frequent watering during dry spells, and if this is spread in sufficient depth, it will smother most w**d seeds. Group plants that require similar water and shade requirements. What to sow and plant this month. Sow in situ, seeds of alyssum, candytuft, cosmos, lavatera, marigold, nasturtium, portulaca, sunflower and zinnia in a sunny position. Plant seedlings of amaranthus, bedding dahlias, celosia, and vinca in a sunny position. Plant seedlings of impatiens, bedding begonias and coleus in semi-shade, or light shade.

Some helpful tasks for SEPTEMBER. Feed all plants with compost and a general fertiliser. Give all pot plants their spring treatment by removing a little of the topsoil and replace with sifted compost or potting soil. Re-pot root bound pot plants. Top dress lawns with w**d-free compost or manure and apply fertiliser at a rate of 60 grams per square metre. It is also a good time to plant lawn runners for a new lawn. Fertilise roses with a rose fertiliser either weekly ( 5g per bush) or monthly ( 20g per bush) Spray with wettable sulphur for protection against leaf diseases and sap sucking insects. The following flower seedlings can be planted this month:- Alyssum, celosia, coleus, dahlia, gazania, busy lizzie, lobelia, marigold, nasturtium, petunia, portulaca, salvia and zinnia.
