Modern Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology has revolutionized the surveying profession.

Surveyors can now determine precise positions within a short period, making GNSS an essential tool for boundary surveys, engineering projects, construction setting-out, topographic mapping, and geodetic control.

Despite these advantages, many positioning problems do not originate from the satellites themselves.

Instead, they result from improper GNSS setup and poor field procedures.

When the receiver is not properly established, even the most advanced GNSS equipment can produce unreliable coordinates that affect every stage of a surveying project.

One of the most common setup mistakes is selecting an unsuitable observation location.

GNSS receivers require a clear view of the sky to receive signals from multiple satellites.

When observations are carried out beneath dense tree canopies, close to tall buildings, near bridges, or beside steep cliffs, satellite signals may become blocked or reflected before reaching the receiver.

This phenomenon, known as multipath, can reduce positioning accuracy and produce unreliable coordinates.

Another common problem is poor antenna setup.

If the GNSS receiver is not positioned directly over the survey mark, every coordinate collected will represent the wrong location.

Likewise, if the antenna pole is not held perfectly vertical, the antenna is displaced from the intended point, introducing horizontal errors into the observations.

Even small setup mistakes become significant when high-precision surveys are required.

Incorrect antenna height is another source of error.

The receiver calculates ground coordinates using the antenna height entered by the surveyor.

If this value is measured or recorded incorrectly, elevation results may be inaccurate, affecting engineering design, construction levels, and control surveys.

Surveyors should always measure the antenna height carefully and verify the entered value before beginning observations.

Beginning observations before the receiver has achieved a reliable satellite solution can also compromise positioning accuracy.

Some surveyors rush to collect data immediately after switching on the equipment.

However, allowing sufficient time for the receiver to acquire satellites, stabilize its solution, and achieve the required positioning quality significantly improves observation reliability.

Environmental conditions should never be ignored.

Strong electromagnetic interference from communication towers, high-voltage power lines, or nearby transmitting equipment may affect signal reception.

Similarly, severe weather conditions and rapidly changing atmospheric conditions can influence GNSS observations, especially during high-precision work.

Professional surveyors evaluate these conditions before relying on collected coordinates.

Reliable GNSS observations also depend on proper quality indicators.

Surveyors should monitor the number of tracked satellites, Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP), correction status, and solution quality before accepting measurements.

Ignoring these indicators simply because coordinates are displayed on the screen can lead to inaccurate results.

Practical field checks further improve confidence in GNSS measurements.

Important control points should be occupied more than once where possible.

Observations can also be verified against existing control stations or confirmed through independent measurements using another setup.

These checks help identify mistakes before inaccurate data becomes part of the final survey.

Routine equipment maintenance is equally important.

Damaged antennas, loose connectors, outdated firmware, weak batteries, or faulty cables can all reduce the performance of a GNSS receiver.

Regular inspections and maintenance help ensure that the equipment performs according to its required specifications.

Successful GNSS surveying is therefore not achieved by technology alone.

It requires careful site selection, proper antenna setup, accurate height measurement, continuous monitoring of satellite quality, routine verification, and disciplined field procedures.

When surveyors combine modern GNSS capabilities with sound professional practice, they produce reliable positioning data that supports accurate mapping, engineering design, construction, and land administration.

Reliable satellite observations begin long before the receiver records its first coordinate.

They begin with surveyors who understand that proper setup is the foundation of precise positioning.

Here is something to think about:

If a GNSS receiver can only calculate positions from the satellite signals it receives, should careful site selection and proper receiver setup be considered just as important as the technology itself in achieving reliable positioning accuracy?
