Big 5 Electrical was started in 2006 by brothers Jaco and Stefan Retief, after deciding that city life in Pretoria was not where they wanted to be.
With Jacoโs background in accounting and Stefan qualified as an installation electrician, the brothers made the move to the Lowveld and began building the business from the ground up.
In the early days, Big 5 Electrical was a one-man show focused on entry-level residential electrical work. It was tough getting started, but with determination, hard work and a bit of luck, they became involved with the Shoprite/Checkers Group, working across numerous stores in the Lowveld.
That opportunity helped the business grow and gave them the chance to prove themselves as a reliable, trustworthy and owner-run company.
Today, Big 5 Electrical has grown into six dedicated teams and has become a well-known name in the commercial and development sector.
As brothers, Jaco and Stefan each bring their own strengths to the business. Stefan leads the technical side and enjoys taking on electrical challenges, while Jaco handles the accounting and financial side together with Sorika, Stefanโs wife, who manages admin and invoicing.
Since 2006, the electrical industry has changed in a big way. Solar was not part of the picture when they started, but as the needs of homes and businesses changed, Big 5 Electrical adapted and grew with the industry.
One of the biggest lessons they have learnt is that things can change at the drop of a hat. In business, you have to be adaptable, practical and ready to find solutions.
For Big 5 Electrical, what keeps clients coming back is the personal touch, skilled staff, friendly service and reliable workmanship.
And for Stefan, the work is worth it in the everyday moments:
When the lights come back on.
When the borehole starts and water runs into the tank.
When someone can take a hot shower because the geyser works again.
When the main stage at a festival keeps running because the generator is doing its job.
Those are the moments that matter.
From a small start in 2006 to six dedicated teams today, Big 5 Electrical has come a long way, and they are proud to keep serving the Lowveld community.
