π’ COMMUNITY UPDATE: AMANDLA BUSINESS FORUM, VDC & VUT ENGAGEMENT
We would like to provide feedback to the community regarding recent developments between the Amandla Business Forum and the Vaal University of Technology (VUT).
π€ VDC SUPPORT
The Vaal Development Committee (VDC) would like to make it clear that we are in full support of the Amandla Business Forum, as the Forum forms part of the VDC and represents the interests of our local SMMEs and community members.
π΄ What Happened
On 28 July 2026, the Amandla Business Forum, representing local SMMEs from Wards 4, 5, 9, and 10, attempted to formally submit a Memorandum of Demands to VUT leadership. Unfortunately, VUT management did not receive the memorandum, which has been viewed by the Forum as a serious disregard for the community.
π Key Concerns Raised by the Forum
- Lack of engagement and accountability from VUT leadership
- Alleged exclusion of local SMMEs from procurement opportunities
- Concerns about the role of procurement consultants (Purco) in awarding contracts
- Limited oversight from the VUT Council on these issues
π’ Actions Taken by the Forum
- Escalation of demands, including calls for transparency, audits, and accountability
- Request for a formal meeting with VUT leadership within 7 days
- Notice of a peaceful demonstration to ensure community voices are heard
π’ VUTβs Response & Commitments
VUT has issued a public announcement highlighting:
- A Supplier Development Programme aimed at supporting local businesses
- Upcoming subcontracting opportunities linked to infrastructure projects
- 10 work packages already set aside for local participation (rolling out from Aug 2026 to Nov 2027)
- Additional opportunities through maintenance projects reserved for local contractors (CIDB Grades 1β2)
- A commitment to improved transparency, compliance, and inclusive procurement processes
π€ Way Forward
The situation highlights the need for:
- Honest engagement between VUT and the community
- Fair access to economic opportunities for local businesses
- Transparency and accountability in procurement processes
We encourage all community members and local businesses to stay informed, united, and engaged as this matter develops.
βπΎ Together, through unity (VDC & Amandla Business Forum), we will continue to fight for inclusion, fairness, and respect for our community.
