Nobody photographs the isolators.

Panels, inverters and batteries get the attention. The protection around them rarely does — yet it's the part that has to deal with it when something goes wrong.

We were brought in on a system someone else had installed, after its DC combiner box burned. The photo shows the damage, not the cause, and we won't guess at the cause from a photograph.

It's a reminder of why this part of any system deserves attention:

DC isolators and fuses let the panel side be switched off and protected safely — for maintenance, and when something goes wrong.

Surge protection diverts surges from lightning and the grid to earth, to help protect your inverter and the rest of the installation.

Earthing and bonding give fault current a safe path.

A separate AC distribution board keeps the solar side laid out, protected and labelled, so the next electrician can see exactly what is there.

Every one of these parts has to be correctly selected, rated for the system it's in, and properly installed.

When you compare quotes, look past the inverter and the battery. Ask what is on the protection side, and what it is rated for.

So werk dit: die son verhit die water eerste. Jou bestaande geiser maak net klaar wat oorbly, en bly jou rugsteun wanneer die son nie genoeg is nie.

Dit is een van drie maniere om 'n Solar Geyser by jou huis in te rig:

Vervang — 'n nuwe Solar Geyser neem die ou geiser se plek in.
Omskakel — 'n sonkollektor word by jou bestaande geiser gevoeg.

🇿🇦 Heritage Day — and we’re still on the job.

Today we’re working on a solar system that was not originally installed by us.

We’ve now been brought in to take over the site after a DC combiner box burned, and this is where the problems became very real.

Our job now is to go through the installation properly, identify what needs to be corrected, replace unsuitable or damaged components, and bring the installation up to the applicable SANS requirements.

⚠️ One important lesson from this site:

Don’t go cheap on your protection equipment.

DC breakers, isolators, fuses, combiner equipment and cabling must be correctly selected and properly rated for the application. These aren't the components where you want shortcuts.

A solar system isn't only about having a good inverter, battery and panels. The quality and correct specification of the protection around them matters just as much.

We’ll share more from this site as we work through the system and get it where it needs to be.

☀️ SPECIALISED SOLAR GEYSER INSTALLATION – SASOLBURG

Another specialised project completed by Vaal Solar Systems.

For this installation, we fitted a 200L Apollo Integrated Solar Geyser at a property in Sasolburg — but this was definitely not a standard geyser installation.

The property already had an existing 150L geyser, which meant the installation had to be modified and adapted to work correctly with the existing setup.

This is exactly the type of work we enjoy.

Not every property is the same, and sometimes an off-the-shelf installation simply isn't the right solution. We assess the existing system, work out what needs to be changed, and build a solution around the property and the client's requirements.
