Parkscape

Parkscape Parkscape is a voluntary non-profit organisation with a mixed community-safety - environmental focus.

Voluntary advocacy NPO, ensuring safety, and protecting the urban forest, cultural landscapes and biodiversity in the buffer zones and wildland-urban interfaces of TMNP. Our vision is driven by the increasing incidence of crime and fire in the ever-reducing buffer zones of Table Mountain National Park, which pose a serious threat to the urban edge. The devastating fires of March 2015 (which destro

yed several homes), and the Devil's Peak fire of 2021 (which caused extensive heritage damage) along with numerous smaller fires and several brutal murders, including the rape and murder of a 16 year old girl in the fynbos of Lower Tokai in 2016, together with numerous ongoing incidents of crime, highlight a critical issue of safety in the 221sq km Park. It is a problem which requires collective and community driven action. Per the Tokai-Cecilia Management Framework, negotiated between the public and SANParks in 2007, Parkscape is also acutely aware of the need for safe and shaded urban greenspace within the buffer zones, which can deliver all the benefits of green infrastructure - ecosystem services - particularly as regards physical and mental health and well-being, and some aspects of climate change mitigation - particularly as regards reducing urban temperatures, while maintaining the treed aesthetic of the cultural landscape of the Constantia-Tokai valley. TMNP is uniquely situated within an urban setting and is, as such, an urban national park and a people’s park. Unlike rural parks such as Kruger National Park, TMNP must meet a broad range of needs from conservation of the Cape Floral Kingdom and Afrotemperate forests to local user needs, particularly the needs of communities that need urban greenspace. Management strategies for the Park must therefore be specific to meeting the demands of an increasingly densified and diverse city environment, from conservation to urban greening and urban forestry for human health and well-being, climate change and sustainable city goals per the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Unfortunately local users regularly run into issues that hinge primarily around safety with respect to crime and fire, access and creeping fees, and failure to manage and maintain infrastructure and biodiversity within the Park. Increasingly locals feel excluded from “their mountain”, with the failure to sufficiently reinvest in the Park exacerbating the situation. The focus on fynbos biodiversity to the exclusion of other biodiversity - including urban forests - and the failure to effectively manage the shrinking buffer zones which lie adjacent to urban edges add to various growing problems. In light of ongoing crime in the Park, together with increased incidents of fire throughout the Park - and an historical reluctance of the SANParks to engage with the public – the vision was born to refocus activity in the buffer zones (per the original foundation documents which underpin the Park’s formation) for the people of Cape Town, starting with Lower Tokai as a potential model. Parkscape’s vision is to create safe, biodiverse and shaded (afforestation of Afrotemperate forest and non invasive exotic species) urban greenspace for all within the buffer zones of the Park, while also providing opportunities for social upliftment, community development, cultural and environmental education – all of which will ultimately serve to address safety concerns.

Beautiful early morning photos from Margie !

The slow winter's dawn, the soft light and crisp, cold air make early morning walks so special. No better way to greet the day.

🌳😌🌇The cooling power of trees starts with shade.

When surfaces like pavement, rooftops and buildings are exposed to direct sunlight, they absorb and store heat, releasing it back into the air long after the sun goes down. Trees interrupt that process. They shade sidewalks, streets and people, preventing surfaces from heating up in the first place. They also cool the surrounding air through evapotranspiration, the release of water v***r from leaves.

Together, shade and evapotranspiration allow trees to provide cooling at multiple scales at once — from lowering neighborhood air temperatures to reducing surface heating to easing hyperlocal thermal stress. This all makes outdoor conditions more bearable during the hottest months of the year and reduces heat-induced illness and mortality.

First Naruna Scout Troop's activities in .

A first aid stunt for one of the scouts doing his springbok advancement, followed by a compass trail through the forest and looking for geocashes.

So great to see these young people enjoying this unique and special space - especially on Youth Day and during Youth Month.

🌿 Happy , South Africa 🌿

Today we honour the young people who changed history — and celebrate those who are making it now.

At Parkscape, we believe a park is only as alive as the people who love it.
For ten years we have watched children claim Tokai Forest as their own — bare feet in the river, faces upturned to the pine canopy, bodies moving through the trees like the forest itself had given them rhythm.
This is what we fight for.

A small boy in a bow tie, utterly absorbed by two sticks and a tree stump. Sisters holding horse-shaped biscuits in the last afternoon light. Teenagers dancing in the cathedral aisles of a forest that some would have us believe has no value.

Tokai has always been a place of belonging — for all Cape Town's children. That was its founding promise. It remains ours.
South Africa's healing and building will happen here — in shared water, shared shade, shared wonder.
These children are our future.

Creating spaces for them to play, to experience, to live well — spaces that allow for nation healing and nation building — is the present and the future on which Parkscape bases its vision of inclusivity and possibility.

Happy Youth Day. 🇿🇦🌿

&

Please be aware of vehicle break-ins around and .

We appeal to all users to please not leave valuables in your vehicles - even if you think you've hidden those valuables.
Perpetrators hang around and watch.
Don't ever assume no one can see what your doing when hiding valuables.

Please also don't think that the self-appointed "car-guards" can or will do anything to prevent vehicle break-ins or any other criminal activity in the area.

Please check, double and triple check that your vehicle is actually locked on leaving it. Certain perpetrators use jamming mechanisms.

Please be aware of your surroundings at all times, listen to your instincts, and take the necessary steps to limit your risk of crime.

And please, in the event of a criminal incident, report it to SAPS. You may think it's a waste of time but it does assist with resource allocation and the simple reality is that unless you report it, the incident officially didn't happen.

Authorities, SSPs and neighbourhood watches are aware of recent incidents, and we've requested increased visibility in the area.

We love these photographs from Laura, mostly of the tiny things she finds in - from ladybirds and cocoons to fly agaric fungi.

Laura's eye for all things small and special gives us an added layer of depth and wonder to the texture of the space.
It really is in the detail that the forest comes even more uniquely to life!

If you like Laura's photos of little things, you can follow her on Instagram at lauraslittlecreatures .

We say it over and over again - if you experience any incidence of criminal activity in or around Tokai Forest - or anywhere else - please report it.
