ERASURE

explores the quiet violence of losing oneself within modern life. A solitary figure remains grounded in the body, while the self is pulled away in blurred, relentless strokes. Existing between presence and absence, the work reflects on burnout, identity, and the psychological weight of isolation. The body endures as a vessel, heavy and luminous, while the face & the site of recognition actually dissolves into motion, suggesting that isolation is not always being alone, but being erased while still being seen.

Conceptual Statement:
Echoes of the Classroom
Echoes of the Classroom reflects the hidden emotions and unspoken realities within a learning environment. The scribbled lines create a restless energy, capturing the tension between discipline and distraction, focus and fatigue. The fragmented faces and gestures symbolize how each learner carries a different story-dreams, struggles, and silent battles-within the same shared space. By layering chaotic marks over recognizable forms, the artwork speaks to the way education is never only about books and lessons, but also about identity, resilience, and the search for belonging. This piece becomes a visual echo of those moments often overlooked in the classroom-the quiet thoughts, suppressed emotions, and unspoken voices of students.

Pray For The Moon

explores the paradox of togetherness and isolation. Beneath a watchful moon, countless figures emerge from the water, connected by fragile threads that reach toward a distant light. Existing between dream and reality, the work reflects on longing, memory, grief, and the human search for connection. Though gathered as one, each figure remains suspended within their own inner world, suggesting that isolation is not always the absence of others, but the distance that can exist between souls.

I would like to sincerely thank the Phoenix Support Centre for the opportunity to be part of the 2nd World Mental Health Awareness Day fundraising event. It is an honour to contribute & feature Itumeleng’s artwork to a cause that advocates for mental health awareness and support.

The Procession.

Ballpoint study on a fabriano depicts a gathering of spectral figures moving through a liminal landscape suspended between memory and reality.
Their faceless forms deny individual identity, transforming them into vessels for collective experience, grief, endurance, and transition. Beneath a distant moon that functions as both witness and guide, the figures traverse an ambiguous terrain marked by traces, scratches, and restless gestures that evoke the persistence of memory.

DEEP WATERS

Kgolegong:
Kgolegong (Sepedi for prison) explores isolation as both protection and confinement. Beneath the surface of the water, a solitary figure withdraws from the world to confront inner turmoil and environmental pressures. The work considers the fragile space between self-preservation and self-imprisonment, where solitude becomes both a refuge and a burden.
