The Soet River Catchment Project in Strand is a powerful example of what can be achieved when environmental responsibility, community involvement, and innovative solutions come together. Led by the City of Cape Town, this comprehensive initiative focuses on cleaning, managing, and preventing pollution in the historically contaminated Soet River, which flows through Lwandle, Nomzamo, and Strand into False Bay.
For years, the river has faced severe challenges due to illegal dumping and high volumes of solid waste entering the water system. Through this project, meaningful steps are being taken to restore and protect this vital waterway for both the surrounding communities and the environment.
Key Aspects of the Project
Litter Interceptors (Trash Traps):
Strategic litter traps, including booms and cages, have been installed to capture solid waste before it reaches the ocean — helping reduce pollution and protect marine ecosystems.
Soet River Catchment Management Forum (SRCMF):
A dedicated, community-driven forum was established to support long-term environmental solutions, improve water quality, and strengthen the relationship between residents and the river system.
