A look back at the Timber Conference, where we had the opportunity to share our experience of working with engineered timber on the recently completed Merensky Library Gallery at the University of Pretoria.
The gallery, designed as a flexible space for students to study, collaborate and engage with the library, is now complete and already being enjoyed by the students who use it.
Our presentation explored the use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) as an alternative to conventional construction methods, from early material studies and structural considerations through to coordination and construction on site. We also reflected on the broader impact that York Timber had had on the construction industry through its investment in educating students and introducing the next generation of professionals to CLT and timber construction.
The conference provided an opportunity to reflect on the role of timber within the construction industry and the potential to expand its application in South Africa.
