Meet Anja Lareman, Professional Architect

Growing up I have vivid memories of sunlight filtering through stained glass windows, dancing across yellow wood floors in the Victorian home we lived in. Staring out a bay window set in thick sandstone walls across the Klein Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, over the town and veld beyond.

The environment around us becomes a patina of lives lived with stories to tell.

Continuing those stories, whether it's done through the conservation of existing structures or designing new spaces to live in, is why I love being an architect.

Meet Marius du Plessis, Professional Architect

Marius is truly a master of all trades.

He is involved with Lareman Architects as a strong conceptual thinker and design initiator. His practical thinking is unmatched, serving the studio well in working through everything from big conceptual schemes to the smallest technical details.

In 2025, Marius enrolled as a contractor with the NHBRC. He is also a director of FAME Projects (Pty) Ltd, a multidisciplinary engineering and architecture practice, and the founder of PODit Self Storage, a self-storage business with branches in Strand, Stellenbosch and Paarl.

Outside of all of this, he is Anja Lareman’s husband - and, perhaps unsurprisingly, one of her favourite people to bounce an idea off.

Meet Yaaqub Samaai, Candidate Snr Architectural Technologist

My path into architecture started early. I remember being fascinated by architectural plans I found in magazines, studying every detail, curious how it could become reality. That curiosity about structure, layout, and the small details that make a space work never faded, and it eventually shaped the direction of my career.
I've always enjoyed figuring out how things function and come together, which is why I value the technical side of architecture as much as the design, finding a way to turn a quickly sketched idea into something practical, and translating that idea into a plan that's not just functional, but genuinely well thought out. There's a real satisfaction in seeing how a building comes together, piece by piece, and making sure every decision serves the people who'll actually live in the space.

Meet Kian Volschenk, Candidate Architect

There's a line that has stayed with me: the tale is in the detail. It says something I've always felt but struggled to put into words. Architecture doesn't just occupy space; it tells a story. Every building embeds a collective memory of the time and the hands that shaped it.

Growing up, I've been fascinated by the way buildings are put together, how materials meet and hold each other, how a joint or a threshold can carry as much meaning as an entire façade. I think that's where my love for this profession truly began, in noticing how deeply we, as people, relate to the spaces we build and live inside.

It has been a privilege to recently join the Lareman Architects team, where I can truly see the care that goes into every design. Here, architecture is narrated with intention, every detail considered, every space telling its own story. It has been an honour to learn and grow each day, unfolding people's dreams and their stories through architecture.

Meet Ingrid Schumtz, Professional Architect

"I remember as a child driving through the vast South African landscape on our way to a holiday destination, looking out the window at how the scenery changes over long stretches, all the while thinking of how to translate the beauty of each dramatic landscape into something tangible.

It is this intense desire of drawing inspiration from the context that stayed with me through my formative years.

Architecture is a way of expressing this desire to create, to capture the essence of something that is complicated and multi-layered into a holistic tangible outcome. Glenn Murcutt’s regionalist design philosophy of “touching the earth lightly” resonates with this.

It is a privilege to have recently joined Lareman Architects where the design outcomes speak towards a respectful and contextually relevant response, as the unique essence of each building is considered."

92 on Main road • Paarl • Heritage project, completed 2025
Growing up with a graphic designer mom, I developed a love for imagining a logo for each project - giving it its own identity. When clients choose to adopt this I feel incredibly privileged.
