UPDATE | MASKED MEN

Last month, Carte Blanche investigated a wave of violent home invasions across the Cape Winelands involving armed, masked attackers. Now, two more incidents have been reported.

On Friday evening, two people, aged 60 and 56, were allegedly ambushed and tied up at their home on Bottelary Road before armed robbers fled with jewellery, cellphones and laptops.

Then, at around 02:00 on Sunday, an attempted house robbery was reported in Klapmuts. Police say the suspect fired shots after being spotted by one of the residents. No one was injured.

No arrests have been made in either case.

CAN PEOPLE SEE INTO YOUR HOME AT NIGHT?

When it's dark outside and your lights are on inside, your windows can become a display case.

If we can see into your home while patrolling, so can criminals.

They may be able to see:
📺 TVs and electronics
💻 Laptops and computers
💍 Jewellery
👜 Handbags and car keys
👥 Who is home and where they are

A simple habit can make a big difference.

As the sun goes down:
✅ Close your curtains or blinds.
✅ Keep valuables out of sight.
✅ Avoid leaving bright rooms fully exposed to the street.

Don't advertise what's inside your home. Privacy is part of your security.

Most criminals don't look for the most expensive house—they look for the easiest opportunity.

A home that appears vulnerable is often more attractive than one that looks difficult to access.

Ask yourself:

💡 Are your entrances well lit after dark?

🌿 Are trees and shrubs creating hiding places?

🚪 Do your gates, doors and windows provide a strong physical barrier?

👀 Can valuables be seen through your windows at night?

🗑️ Are bins, ladders or other items making it easier to climb over your wall?

One important reminder: Technology alone is not enough.

Alarm systems and cameras are valuable, but they work best when combined with good physical security, sensible habits and regular maintenance.

Take a few minutes to walk around your property as if you were seeing it for the first time. You may spot an opportunity that a criminal would notice.

The harder your home looks to access, the more likely a criminal is to move on.

Knowing who normally belongs in your street makes unusual activity easier to spot.

👋 Get to know the people living around you.

👀 Notice what is normal in your street.

🚗 Be aware of unfamiliar vehicles or activity.

📱 If something seems out of place, don't confront anyone — report suspicious behaviour.

🤝 A connected community is an aware community.

Make sure all exterior doors are properly locked.

If you have an alarm, make sure it is activated.

🚗 VEHICLE LOCKED
Check that your vehicle is locked and valuables are out of sight.

🔑 KEYS OUT OF SIGHT
Keep house keys, vehicle keys and remotes away from doors and windows.

It takes less than a minute, but these simple checks can prevent you from waking up to an unpleasant surprise.
