The "Big Three" Dominators
(Where 6 out of 10 People Work)
Our economy is heavily driven by services. Just three sectors account for a staggering 60.4% of all employment in South Africa:
1️⃣ Community and Social Services
(23.6% of the workforce):
Employing over 4.03 million people, this includes government jobs, education, healthcare, and civic organizations. It remains the largest single source of employment in the country and grew by +46,000 jobs this last quarter.
2️⃣ Trade (19.5% of the workforce):
Wholesale, retail, mechanics, hotels, and restaurants keep 3.32 million South Africans employed. However, it shed 98,000 jobs this quarter a warning sign that consumer spending power has been under intense pressure.
3️⃣ Finance (17.3% of the workforce):
Banking, insurance, real estate, and business services employ 2.96 million people. It remains a remarkably stable and reliable pillar of our job market.
✅️ If you are building a business or looking for high volume job markets, your primary target audience or employment source is likely sitting right inside these three massive sectors.
