Turkish company Karpowership has been included in the preferred bids for South Africa’s Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP), to supply three power ships to alleviate the country’s power supply woes.

Our MD, Craig Greenaway has more than a smattering of Irish blood in him so no doubt he along with thousands of others here in South Africa will be raising a glass or two in memory of Ireland’s patron Saint, Maewyn Succat….who became St Patrick at the time of his death in 461 AD.

We often get approached to assist homeowners with their remodelling projects.

We are obviously delighted to get involved. A couple of “bewares” however. Firstly, be careful not to overcapitalise your property. The houses in your area will have an average price, so when spending your hard-earned money on a renovation and it pushes the cost to well over the average, you may well have a challenge on your hands should you decide to sell at any time.

Secondly, avoid highly personalized improvements. Just because you think a whirlpool bath in the middle of the living room is a great idea, it probably won’t appeal to a potential buyer if you plan on selling ever.

Whatever you are thinking about in terms of any type of renovation, talk to us first.

A while ago we posted a blog penned by our boss Craig Greenaway about converting shipping containers into usable living spaces.

We have been asked if we could repost it, so here it is...it’s certainly an interesting read!

You can date shipping containers back to the mid-1950s when American trucking tycoon, Malcolm McLean put 58 trailer vans (rudimentary containers) aboard a refitted tanker ship and sailed them successfully from New York to Houston, a distance of some 2359 nautical miles (4400 Kms). The building industry is littered with sad tales of contractors having to close their doors. The wilting economy, adversely affected by the Covid pandemic is generally recognised as haemorrhaging the coffers of small to medium-sized businesses in the construction industry.

New builds are the exception to the rule, whereas renovation and conversion projects dominate. This scenario has seen the unfortunate rise in cheap and quite frankly unprofessional, “two men and a Bakkie” operations.

Please be warned that the cheapest comes at a cost. We’ve used this quote before but it’s worth repeating. It’s from the Founding Father of the United States, Benjamin Franklin, ”the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low prices are forgotten”

At the time of its construction, the tallest building in Boston was the John Hancock Tower, it was shrouded in controversy even before it was built.

Initial plans showed that the construction would overshadow local landmark Trinity Church..a speedy redesign by the architects solved the problem. More was to come, however, during the build, the blue reflective windows at various floors started to fall off, so much so that the local police cordoned off the entire area. Additional integrity issues were found as a result of wind tunnel tests, however, the main cause for concern was that the building expanded and contracted depending on weather conditions. The reflective material used on the windows was stiffer than anticipated and instead of absorbing motion it transferred it and even more windows fell out.

In all over a staggering 10,000 panes of glass were replaced by single panel heat-treated alternatives.

Here at Revamp Design Construct, we don't “get it wrong” and certainly not to the extent of the John Hancock Tower in Boston!
Clearly, they didn’t ensure the contractor helped turn the dream into reality…
