What to Do If You’re Concerned, call the professionals .

This is not DIY stuff
If a tree on your property is showing any of the warning signs, particularly a new lean, exposed roots, or raised soil around the base — it is important to act promptly.
The cost of a professional tree assessment is minimal when compared to the potential damage and danger of a tree falling onto a roof, vehicle, boundary wall, or, most importantly, a person.
A few practical steps to take immediately:
• Keep people/vehicles clear of the area.
If the tree is near parking areas, pathways, play spaces, or outdoor living areas, restrict access until the tree has been professionally assessed.
• Document the warning signs. Especially if you are in a complex
Take clear photographs of the base of the tree, any visible lean, cracks in the trunk, exposed roots, or fungal growth. These images can assist a professional arborist or tree feller in evaluating the urgency of the situation before arriving on site.
• Gum trees are a real threat.
• Seek professional advice as soon as possible.
Not every tree displaying warning signs necessarily needs to be removed. In many cases, experienced tree specialists can reduce canopy weight, improve structural balance, or address root-related issues without complete removal. However, early assessment is critical to ensure there is sufficient time to take preventative action safely and effectively.
• Do not attempt to prune or remove the tree yourself.
Working beneath a structurally compromised tree can be extremely dangerous. Even on a calm day, unstable trees can shift or fail unpredictably. The tree or trees may be spring-loaded and jump up when cutting

Warning Signs to Look for on Your Property After Heavy Rain
Following prolonged or heavy rainfall, it is advisable to inspect all mature trees on your property carefully. Many trees that appear stable immediately after a storm may, in fact, have compromised root systems or hidden structural damage that only becomes evident later.
Below are some of the most important warning signs to look out for: WATCH OUT!
1. Fungal Growth at the Base of the Tree
The appearance of mushrooms or bracket fungi around the trunk or root zone can indicate internal decay or root rot. Waterlogged soil creates ideal conditions for fungal pathogens, particularly after extended periods of saturation. ( We also do well designed and installed agricultural drainage systems, not only for the trees , buildings and lawn areas. Are you a golfer? Can you drive you cart on the golf course, I cant and that is because the agricultural drains are too shallow
It is important to remember that visible fungal growth is often only the surface symptom — substantial decay may already exist below ground level. This brings ants and other problems
2. WATCH OUT!
New or Increased Leaning
A tree that previously stood upright but has developed a noticeable lean should be treated with caution. This is often one of the clearest indicators that the root system has begun to shift.
Use fixed reference points such as a fence line, boundary wall, or the corner of a building to compare the tree’s position. If the lean appears more pronounced than before, the root plate may already be destabilising.
3. Newly Exposed Roots
Heavy rain and water runoff can wash away topsoil surrounding the base of a tree. If roots that were previously underground have suddenly become exposed, the tree may be losing critical support and stability.
Exposed structural roots are particularly concerning, as they indicate erosion and reduced anchorage strength.
4. Sudden Leaf Loss or Canopy Thinning
A tree that begins shedding leaves unexpectedly or displays a noticeably thinner canopy compared to neighbouring trees of the same species, may be experiencing root stress.
When roots are damaged or deprived of oxygen in saturated soil, the tree often responds by reducing foliage in an attempt to conserve energy and survive.
5. Cracks or Splitting in the Trunk
Any new crack in the trunk or major limbs should be regarded as a significant structural warning sign, particularly vertical splits.
Trees subjected to strong winds while rooted in softened, unstable soil can develop internal stress fractures that only become visible once the bark begins to separate or split.
6. Raised or Cracked Soil Around the Base
When a tree’s roots begin lifting from the ground, the surrounding soil often cracks, bulges, or rises visibly on one side of the trunk. You may notice lifted turf, exposed earth, or uneven ground where the lawn was previously level.
This is a serious warning sign, as it suggests movement within the root plate — the primary structure responsible for anchoring the tree.

Final Recommendation
If any of these warning signs are present, it is advisable to have the tree professionally assessed as soon as possible. Early intervention can often prevent property damage, injury, and the far greater cost associated with emergency tree removal after failure

Why Trees Often Fall Weeks After a Storm — Not During It

One of the most common patterns we observe during emergency tree call-outs is surprisingly consistent: the tree did not fail during the storm itself. Instead, it collapses days or even weeks later — often during mild weather and in relatively light wind conditions. Homeowners are understandably confused, especially when the tree may have stood safely for decades.

The explanation lies largely in soil stability and root anchorage.

During periods of heavy rainfall, the ground surrounding a tree’s root system becomes saturated. As the soil absorbs excess water, it loses much of its structural strength and ability to firmly anchor the roots. The difference is similar to pulling a tent peg from compact dry ground versus soft mud — the resistance is dramatically reduced.

Ironically, many trees survive the initial storm event because several stabilising factors are still in play. The root system may remain mostly intact, the canopy is often weighed down by rainwater, and wind gusts tend to shift direction rather than apply continuous force from one angle.

The real danger frequently develops afterwards.

In the days and weeks following prolonged rain, the soil can remain waterlogged for an extended period. This weakens the tree’s support structure even further and may begin stressing or damaging the roots through lack of oxygen and early-stage rot. Once the canopy dries and becomes lighter again, even a moderate breeze can create enough leverage to uproot the tree entirely.

For this reason, trees should always be monitored after major storms — not only during them. Leaning trunks, lifting soil around the base, cracking sounds, or sudden canopy decline are all warning signs that a tree may be unstable and require professional assessment. Ants get into the root system, killing it off and the anchor points. Lets spray and monitor your trees

There is a new challenge everyday in my line of work landscaping wise. No 2 gardens or ponds are the same, and I am grateful for it. Last night I did not sleep much because out of a challenge came inspiration.

If you build a solid foundation, you can build on it, no problem. Have understanding and gain knowledge will help you see the light. Very quickly , due to all the rains trees and shrubs have a lot of disease at the moment. Don't wait for them to die to call me out.

There’s something oddly satisfying about the smell of a freshly mowed lawn.
That crisp, green scent feels like summer productivity — neat edges, longer days, and weekends spent outside.
But here in Johannesburg, that ritual starts slowing down as Autumn settles in and Winter approaches. The grass grows slower, mornings get sharper, and eventually the mower gets parked a little longer between cuts.
It’s also the season where a bit of preparation pays off:
• Raise your mower height slightly to avoid stressing the lawn
• Clear fallen leaves before they smother the grass
• Feed the soil, not just the lawn — compost and winter fertiliser help
• Water less often, but deeply when needed
• Service the mower before storing it away for winter
There’s a leadership lesson in it too.
Not every season is about rapid growth.
Some seasons are about maintenance, preparation, and protecting the foundation so that when spring returns, growth comes back stronger.
Nature seems to understand sustainable performance better than most of us do.

Why an Irrigation System is the Backbone of a Garden ( Part 1)

A beautiful garden is far more than just plants and lawn — it is a living ecosystem that depends on one essential element: water. Without a reliable and properly designed irrigation system, even the most expensive landscaping can struggle to survive and thrive.
An irrigation system is truly the backbone of a successful garden.
In South Africa especially, where weather conditions can vary from heavy summer rains to long dry spells, consistent watering is critical. Plants, lawns, shrubs, and trees all have different water requirements, and manual watering often leads to overwatering in some areas and underwatering in others. A professionally designed irrigation system ensures that water is distributed evenly, efficiently, and at the correct times.
The benefits go far beyond convenience:
Healthier Plants
Consistent moisture levels help plants establish stronger root systems, improve growth, and reduce stress. Healthy plants are naturally more resistant to pests and disease.
Water Efficiency
Modern irrigation systems are designed to minimise water waste. With correct zoning, timing, and spray coverage, gardens receive only the water they need — saving both water and money.
Protecting Your Investment
Landscaping is an investment. Irrigation protects that investment by ensuring that lawns stay green, flower beds flourish, and trees continue to mature properly over time.

Growing Gardens with Purpose

Too often, I see construction sites, residential renovations, office parks, and beautiful new developments lose their appeal the moment the landscaping begins.

We usually only see the final photos or videos of the “finished” product — but what truly defines a finished landscape? More importantly, will it still thrive and perform properly a year later?

In many cases, landscaping becomes an afterthought. Budgets are exhausted, planning falls short, or there’s an assumption that laying lawn and planting a few trees is enough to complete the project. Unfortunately, this often leads to costly problems down the line.

Over the years, I’ve been called in countless times to correct these issues — and often uncover many more beneath the surface.

So why choose R&R Landscaping?

Because experience matters. We understand the challenges that can arise before we even step onto site. Successful landscaping is not just about aesthetics; it’s about building a sustainable foundation for long-term growth.

Just like any building requires:

A solid foundation
Proper support structures and reinforcement

…so does a successful garden and landscaped environment.

The foundation of every thriving garden starts with the soil.
But not all soil is the same.

We ask the important questions:

Is the soil clay-heavy?
Is it shallow or compacted?
How well does it drain?
Are subsurface agricultural drains required?
What is the soil pH?
Has topsoil been replaced with unsuitable subsoil during construction and levelling?

These are the details that determine whether a landscape simply looks good on handover day — or continues to flourish for years to come.

At R&R Landscaping, we believe landscaping should be built with purpose, sustainability, and longevity in mind.
