Because water doesn’t always travel straight down.

Once water enters through a damaged tile, failed flashing, roof joint or another defect, it can travel along the roof slope, underlays, battens and structural members before eventually reaching your ceiling.

So the brown water stain inside your home tells you where the water appeared - not necessarily where it entered.
