TIMBER IN CONSTRUCTION
We go to parks and nature reserves to be surrounded by trees whether they have a thick canopy or stark without foliage during winter. They simply attract us through their textures, colours and complexity of forms. This is also the case when we utilize timber for building purposes.
Timber elements in a building can either be used as concealed structural components like trusses in a roof space or as fully exposed structural members which define the space.
As a life-style is enhanced by the spatial and formal characteristics of the space which accommodate its activities, the selection of the materials which defines it assumes primary consideration.
In considering timber as a structural and finishing material we recognize its unique quality of creating an ambience of warmth, lightness and softness which no other building material can match. The exposed grains of treated timber mark the natural texture of the material which is rich in variations of colour shades, linear contours and shapes. An environment defined by exposed timber structural members becomes alive as it is a visual stimulant conducive to the feeling of well-being.
Tondolo Architects have introduced timber as a structural and finishing materials in many buildings to create focal points in space. They become features which enliven the space and add light and colour.
