This month we are turning one question on our own work: does this space actually improve someone’s life?
It is a harder question than it sounds. Emma Lynn of UNStudio said it plainly: “We’re interested in what architecture does, not just what it is.” Most of the ways our profession judges a building are about what it is. We look at its form, its materials and the photographs taken on the day it was finished. Very few of those measures tell us what the building does to the people living in it a year later.
Emma was also honest about the limits of our role. “We can’t just draw a blueprint and suddenly people become healthy and stress free.” A designer can shape the conditions. A designer cannot promise the outcome.
We are spending October sitting with that difference, and being honest with ourselves about which side of it our work has been judged on.
