Find your alarm panel's battery date. Open the panel box. There is a sealed battery in there with a date printed on it. Most last three to five years. Read the date out loud. If it is older than five years, it is not backing anything up — it is a brick with terminals, and it will announce that during the next outage, at night, when the panel goes quiet instead of loud. It is the least expensive thing in your entire security setup to replace and the one most likely to be forgotten.

Trustees: the question worth asking at the next meeting. Not "are the guards doing their job?" — nobody can answer that in a meeting. Ask instead: can we see last month's activity log? Guard monitoring means the officer's movements are tracked by GPS, the points that must be reached carry RFID tags, and it all comes out as activity logs, emergency alerts and performance reports that go to the client. Not a promise. A document. It is one of our ten services and it is the one that gets requested least — mostly because people do not know it exists to ask for.

Schools go back today, and the morning run is the busiest minute your gate has. Three habits, and none of them cost anything. Watch it close. All the way, not most of the way. A gate that bounces back off something and sits open is the most common way a closed gate turns out to be an open one. Do not sit in the driveway with it open. The phone, the lunchbox, the child who forgot something — whatever it is, it can happen with the gate shut behind you. Leave the same way every time. Same route to the gate, same look left and right before you pull out. Routine is what makes something out of place obvious. The gate is only as good as the minute after it opens.

Four things an operator needs from you. Learn them before you need them. Our 24/7 radio control room is the hub — it is where the alarm signal, the camera feed and the officer on the ground all land on one desk, and where the dispatch decision gets made. When you phone it, the operator needs four things, in this order: 1. Your address. Street and number, not the landmark. 2. What you can see or hear. Not what you think it means. 3. Who is in the house and where they are. 4. A number that will still answer if the line drops. That is it. Everything else can wait. Practise it out loud once with whoever else lives there — it takes thirty seconds and it is the difference between a clear call and a scrambled one. 061 413 9130.

Ten services. Here is what October covers.
When we started this, most people knew us for two things: a
guard at a gate and a vehicle that arrives. The list is longer than
that, and September began working through it.
Guarding · Armed reaction · Tactical unit · K-9 unit · CCTV
monitoring · 24/7 radio control · Guard monitoring · Technical
services · Riot team · VIP protection.
This month we take the control room, the cameras, the guardmonitoring
reports, the dogs and the technical side — one at a
time, the same way. And the Friday Check carries on every
Friday, as it has since August.
No sales script. Just what each one is, and what it is for.

A gate remote is a key.

It opens your property, and it spends most of its life in the one thing you leave unattended in a public parking area — the car. A remote and a licence disc sitting in the same vehicle hand someone both your address and a way through your gate.

Three minutes this morning, before you drive anywhere.

Take the remote off the sun visor. Check the cubbyhole and the door pocket while you are there.

Look at what else rides in the car with it — a licence disc, post, a delivery slip, anything carrying your address.

Count the remotes, then name the person holding each one. Old tenant, old contractor, a car you sold. If you cannot put a name to a remote, delete that code from the gate motor. Most motors let you clear a single code without wiping the rest.

Then keep the remote on you rather than in the car, or move the gate onto a keypad or a tag so there is nothing worth taking off the visor in the first place.

Heritage Day. Braai day, if we are honest. Ten services, twelve vehicles and a control room that does not close — and today most of that exists so that a lot of people can stand around a fire without thinking about any of it. To everyone working today, in our uniform and in everyone else's: thank you. To everyone not working: enjoy it properly. That is the point of the day.

Footage nobody watches is a record of what you already lost. There is a real difference between recording and monitoring, and it is not the camera. It is whether a trained person is looking at the feed while it happens. Our operators watch live feeds from client sites, pick up what does not belong, and put it on the radio to a vehicle. And when the worst has already happened, the same footage becomes the evidence — clean, time-stamped, and handed over properly. Both matter. Only one of them can still change the ending. HASHTAGS

Our tactical unit is the specialist end of what we do: a trained team, separately equipped, that the control room escalates to when a situation is beyond ordinary response. They are not the vehicle that comes out for a triggered beam. We are writing this plainly and once, without a story attached, because a unit like this is not a marketing prop. It exists because some situations require training that ordinary response work does not build. That is the whole post.
