TECHNICAL TUESDAY | PAVING DETAILS

This week we are looking at the entrance paving details developed for the Type H houses at Stellenbosch Village.

Two related paving specifications are used to distinguish the surface bed from the external walkway. The house threshold uses 222 × 76 × 15 mm Cape Thin Brick paving tiles, while the walkway uses the more robust 230 × 76 × 35 mm Klompie brick paver.

The paving layout can be expressed in either a herringbone or soldier course bond, with the drawings coordinating the paving pattern with the entrance gate, building edges, levels, falls and waterproofing.

It is a relatively small part of the overall house, but resolving these interfaces during the technical drawing stage gives the contractor clear information and helps the finished entrance read as one coordinated architectural element.

THE SOCIAL HEART OF OAKHILLS

Working drawings and architectural visualisations of the clubhouse and apartment building we designed for Oakhills Estate in Stellenbosch for Invictus Developments, Kamnandi Group and Citycapital.

At lower ground level, the clubhouse creates a central gathering place for the estate, accommodating a coffee shop, lounge and workspaces, gym and exercise facilities that open onto a generous covered outdoor patio.

Timber pergolas provide filtered shade and help blur the boundary between inside and outside, while the three storeys of apartments above are articulated through pitched roofs, balconies and vertical screens that reduce the perceived scale of the building.

The plans, sections, and elevations show the technical coordination behind the project and how the clubhouse, residential accommodation, structure, circulation, and roof forms are brought together into a single architectural composition.

𝐒𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐓𝐔𝐀𝐑𝐘

A quieter look at the main bedroom of a new luxury residence we are designing in Pretoria, set amongst a number of large indigenous trees retained across the site.

The bedroom is conceived as a calm retreat within the landscape, with expansive glazing opening the interior towards the garden and tree canopy. A tall vertical window draws natural light deep into the room, while warm timber, textured concrete and dark metal create a restrained, natural material palette.

The timber-lined ceiling continues towards the private terrace, visually extending the bedroom into the landscape and reinforcing the connection between inside and outside.

A space designed for slow Saturday mornings, filtered light and views into the trees.

𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧, 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗢𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗘
A further look at our design for the new Hoërskool Linden Sportkompleks in Johannesburg, this time focusing on the south façade facing the school’s existing outdoor netball courts.

This side of the building plays an important role in connecting the new indoor facility with the wider sporting environment of the school. The first floor includes a **clubhouse, viewing deck, balcony and pavilion seating**, creating spaces from which spectators and learners can engage with both the indoor sports hall and the outdoor courts.

A large slatted canopy extends over the outdoor social areas, providing shade while creating a comfortable gathering space alongside the netball courts. The clubhouse opens towards these areas through generous glazing, maintaining a strong visual relationship between indoor social spaces and the activity outside.

The first-floor plan illustrates how spectator circulation and viewing areas are organised around the indoor court, while the elevations show how the building’s metal screen, facebrick, glazing and broad roof work together across the different façades.

The aim was to create a sports centre that contributes to the broader life of the school, linking indoor and outdoor sport with spaces for spectators, gathering and social interaction.

𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗗𝗥𝗔𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦 𝗪𝗘𝗗𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗗𝗔𝗬 | 𝗧𝗬𝗣𝗘 𝗙𝟮 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘, 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗕𝗢𝗦𝗖𝗛 𝗩𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗔𝗚𝗘

This week we are sharing the technical construction drawings and site progress of the Type F2 house at Stellenbosch Village.

From the ground floor and first floor plans to the roof plan, sections and elevations, these drawings form the technical foundation of the project and guide how the design is translated into built form on site.

The accompanying site photos show that process underway, with the concrete and masonry structure established and the roof trusses beginning to define the final shape and character of the house.

Working drawings are where design intent is coordinated in detail, bringing together structure, levels, openings, roof geometry and buildability to support construction on site.

It is always rewarding to see a project move from drawings on paper to spaces taking shape in the real world.

WARM • MODERN • REFINED

We recently developed this series of moodboards for a luxury private residence we are designing in Stellenbosch.

The purpose of the boards was to communicate the conceptual approach and mood of each room, while also showing how the home will come together as a cohesive whole. Each space has been considered in its own right, but always as part of a larger architectural language.

The material palette focuses on natural timber, travertine, light stone, soft plaster finishes, linen and textured fabrics, complemented by black metal accents and warm ambient lighting. Together, these elements create interiors that feel grounded, comfortable and timeless.

The moodboards explore the dining room, covered patio, main bedroom, main bathroom, guest bedroom, study lounge, study and wine cellar. They help guide conversations with the client around atmosphere, finishes, furniture direction and the overall feeling of the home before detailed interior decisions are finalised.

A warm and contemporary residence, carefully shaped for modern living in the Stellenbosch landscape.
