How to check a builder in five minutes.
Before you pay anyone a cent, do these five things.
One. Ask for the company name and registration number. Then look it up. A real business is registered and you can find it.
Two. Ask for a street address. Not only a cellphone number. Drive past it if you can.
Three. Ask for two people they built for this year. Then phone those people. Ask what went wrong, not what went right. Every job has something.
Four. Ask about the NHBRC. If a builder puts up a new home for you, they must be registered with the NHBRC and the home must be signed up before they start. That is the law. For a small renovation it usually does not apply. Ask anyway, and see if they know the answer.
Five. Ask for the quote in writing. It must say what work, what materials and when you pay. If a man will not put it on paper, that tells you everything.
A good builder will not be offended by these five questions. We are not.
