Red Energy Africa

Red Energy Africa Red Energy is a Commercial Solar System Design Company that pushes the boundaries of Alternative Energy. In 2008, Jakes Joubert founded Red Energy.

Our mission: to ensure operational efficiency of the Southern African business sector. Access, escalating cost and reliability of the national electricity supply threatened economic growth. Red Energy took on the challenge to be a solution. If there was a way to ensure output exceeds input, we would find it, refine it and make it available to the business community. The first major breakthrough came in 2008. We managed to do something which was not even considered possible at the time. We established a cost-effective way to convert an electric geyser to a solar geyser, without the need for a circulation pump. The innovation continued. In 2014, Red Energy designed and completed the first Photo Voltaic conversion on a geyser. Again, before anyone thought it was possible. We also launched the first Island Inverter. We also put together an inverter that allowed a single-phase pump to run on solar energy. All these are of course, still operational to this day. One of our most prized achievements was the launch of another new product. Our first Direct Current (DC) Solar Borehole Pump. This was no easy feat. It took about 6 months of intensive research and lab tests, followed by another 6 months of extensive field tests. In the end we produced a product ready to take on the global market. Yet again we managed to deliver a much-needed product when no one else could. Not only did we deliver then, but we maintain to be market leaders in these products to this day. We were not done yet. In 2017, we were part of the research and development on the famous OHM Hybrid Inverter. This was another product which reinforced our dream of ensuring business efficiency. We tested, fine-tuned and launched the OHM Hybrid Inverter in 2019. Today, it is still the most preferred and best-selling Inverter worldwide. We are also the only distributor in South Africa of the OHM Hybrid Inverter. We have not stopped pioneering the way since then. We will be launching three very exciting products this year, pushing the boundaries of innovation even further. Red Energy successfully and consistently manages to provide innovative products that deliver more, at lower cost. We manage and maintain this excellence through exceptional teamwork. Every valuable member of our team participates toward the same vision. We know we can, and do change the world, one connection at a time. Our sales team will ensure you receive the optimal energy solution for your every need. Our support team will ensure consistent performance to keep your business thriving. What we offer is no longer only a step ahead of the rest, we are way ahead, and moving fast. Team up with Red Energy. Can you risk to stay behind? Will you really wager the success of your business on an expensive, unreliable electricity supply and failing infrastructure? You don’t have to. We have established the financial viability of our products. We are saving customers a lot of money while maintaining business continuity. Take control and let Red Energy help your business progress. Eskom tariffs have gone up by over 350% in the past decade!
NERSA has already approved 8.76% for this year and 8.83% for next. These are not projections. It is signed, approved, and coming regardless of how 'stable' the grid feels right now.

Most businesses absorb it, adjust the budget, and move on. Then April comes around again.

A commercial solar system pays back in 3 - 5 years. After that, a large portion of your electricity costs you nothing... for the next 15 to 20 years.

The Eskom bill is the expense. Solar is what ends it.

...more than most people realise. 👇

A solar system is live infrastructure. It cycles every day, responds to weather and load shifts, logs faults, and gradually ages. Most of the time this happens quietly and correctly. And sometimes it does not. The difference between catching a problem in week 3 and finding it 14 months later is significant (in rand terms and in client relationship terms).

This is what active monitoring actually does, as opposed to a dashboard you log into occasionally and then forget the password for:
It compares your real generation against what the weather and panel orientation should be producing. A gap between those two numbers is the earliest possible warning sign.

It watches battery cycling behaviour. A cell behaving differently from the rest shows up in cycle depth data before it becomes a capacity problem you can feel.

It logs inverter events, including brief self-correcting faults that are invisible to the user but visible in the data. A pattern of those is worth investigating before the frequency increases.

Every system we install is monitored actively. After-sales service without active monitoring is just a phone number. We are not a phone number.

If you've been in the solar industry long enough, you know exactly what this feels like:
A serious commercial opportunity lands - a factory, a lodge, a farm, a data centre - and the conversation in your own business goes krrrk kkrrrkk for a moment because everyone knows the project needs more than you currently have.

More installation capacity.
More engineering depth.
Better access to bankable products.
A relationship with a funding house that can get the deal financed.

So you walk away from it. Or worse, you take it on and it goes sideways.

We built our partner programme specifically for this situation. Over 16 years of doing this ourselves (engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and maintenance, all in-house) - we've developed the capacity to step in behind a partner and deliver the project properly while they stay in front of the client.

The model is straightforward: you bring the relationship and the opportunity, we bring the firepower to execute it. You keep the margin. Your client gets a properly delivered system. Your reputation comes out of it stronger than when it went in.

We've done this across game lodges, data centres, steel fabricators, farms, and retirement villages. The projects on our portfolio page are proof of what gets delivered when the full EPC capability is behind the work.

16 years ago we started Red Energy with a simple belief: South Africa deserves better when it comes to energy!

We are proud of what we have built - not only the systems we have installed, but also the businesses we have helped power, the relationships we have kept, and the team that shows up every single day.

Happy Heritage Day to every South African who keeps building, keeps going, and keeps the lights on.

Most solar companies choose their components based on what the distributor is pushing that month.

We chose Sigenergy differently. After years in the field seeing what holds up and what does not under South African conditions - the heat, the dust, the grid instability, the abuse that commercial sites put equipment through - the SigenStor earned its place in our offering on performance, not on a brochure.

As our CEO puts it: "We've been in this industry long enough to see what works and what doesn't. The SigenStor is smart on paper and it performs where it counts- in real businesses, under real pressure."

Sigenergy recognised us as Silver Installer for 2026. The year before that it was Gold and Top Installer. Two years running, based on installation quality and system performance data across our client base.

Awards are a by-product. The thing we are actually proud of is never having had to phone a client to explain why a system we specified is not doing what we said it would.

That does not happen by accident.

Before you sign a solar contract, ask these to any installer and then pay close attention to their answers:

1. Can I see monitoring reports from a system you installed three years ago?
2. What is your local claims process if a component fails in year four — not the distributor's process, yours specifically?
3. Is the installation team employed directly by you, or are they subcontracted?
4. Have you physically visited the factory that manufactures the batteries you are specifying?
5. What is your average response time on a support call, and can you demonstrate that with actual examples?
6. What happens to my warranty and support if your company restructures or closes?

Good solar companies answer all six immediately, specifically, and with evidence you can verify.

Companies that have not invested in after-sales infrastructure, supply chain oversight, or in-house installation teams find these questions uncomfortable. Some will change the subject. Some will answer vaguely and hope you move on.

The discomfort is the information.

We answer all six without hesitation. We actively encourage clients to ask them — because clients who ask hard questions before signing are the ones who come back for phase two.

It is never "we do not believe in solar."
It is always "we cannot commit the capital right now."

A Power Purchase Agreement removes that conversation entirely. Red Energy designs, installs, owns, and maintains the complete system on your premises. You pay for the electricity it generates at a rate up to 50% below your current Eskom tariff.

No upfront investment, capital outlay or maintenance responsibility. Also, no call-out fees! If a panel is damaged by hail, we replace it - covered under our insurance, not yours.

The contract runs for ten to twenty years. After ten years, you have the option to buy the system at a predetermined price.
We carry the asset risk because a well-engineered system's economics are solid enough that we are comfortable owning it for two decades.

The savings start on day one. The capital stays in your business where it actually belongs.

Pitse Lodge at Welgevonden Private Game Reserve has no grid connection. What it does have: Big Five, international guests from London, New York, and Tokyo who expect everything to work without exception, and a 5-star rating that depends on exactly that.

We installed a 90kW SigenStor 5-in-1 energy system, 288kWh of battery backup, and 90kWp of solar panels. The generator that previously ran the lodge now sits idle in a maintenance bay. Guests hear bush sounds at dinner, not engine noise.

The brief was not simply "keep the lights on." It was running air conditioning, gourmet kitchens, w**e cellars, electric fencing, water pumps, and satellite communications through heat, dust, and extended cloudy winter periods - without interruption, excuses, or anyone noticing there was no Eskom connection.

The SigenStor reads incoming weather forecasts and adjusts how it charges and dispatches energy accordingly. On a day where cloud cover is forecast for the afternoon, it stores more in the morning. Anticipatory.

What the guests notice: nothing. Which is exactly the point.

South Africa's solar market has grown up fast. Here is what that means if you are still sitting on the fence:

1. Yes, 2022 to 2023 was chaos. Desperate buyers, cowboys with a bakkie and a catalogue, and a country making big financial decisions under load shedding-induced panic. A lot of those systems are quietly underperforming right now. Their owners are not talking about it publicly, but they are calling us.

2. Now the panic is gone. The good installers have capacity and lead times are predictable. You have time to actually check references, visit completed installations, and ask uncomfortable questions before signing anything.

3. The next crunch is not a mystery - the 2029 coal retirement is in Eskom's own planning documents. When that conversation heats up, the calm market disappears with it...

The businesses who sort themselves out in 2026 will watch 2029 from a very comfortable position.

The window is open. It is not permanent - now is your time.

Systems commissioned in September and October capture high summer generation from the first week. The payback clock starts in the best possible conditions.

You head into the 2027 winter fully optimised rather than still waiting in someone's installation queue.

We are not saying the stars aligned for commercial solar this September.
We are saying the sun did.
