Food Lover’s Market Meat Processing Plant, Midrand, 2023.

A 6000m² meat processing plant for Food Lover’s Market at Lord’s View Industrial Estate in Midrand. The new state of the art plant houses the newest technology in meat processing and meets the highest standards in hygiene and efficiency. The plant includes freezers, processing/production areas for beef, lamb, pork and poultry, delivery, and dispatch areas as well as packaging. Specialist areas include biltong, oxtail and high value processing like smoked meats and marinades. The plant also includes offices, boardrooms, staff ablutions, canteen, wardrobe, laundry, and hygiene lobbies. Equipped with ASIB approved fire systems, back-up water systems and operate 100% on solar energy. This ensures that the facility can operate 24 hours/day and that there are no breakages in the cold-chain or production down-time. The building aesthetic complies with the strict guidelines of the Lord’s View Estate with a contemporary exterior and office areas overlooking the view towards Midrand. Construction is a minimal grid of concrete columns, to allow open and flexible production spaces, with a steel roof and clad with insulated panels with a chromadeck finish.

The High Performance Centre, University of Pretoria LC De Villiers Sports Grounds, 2002.

The High Performance Sports Centre was commissioned by the University of Pretoria as a joint venture with private enterprise. It is a training academy, with world class standards, and forms part of the University’s sports campus. It is made up of various facilities, these include a medical centre, gymnasium, with state-of-the-art sporting equipment, dining, retail, administration, an auditorium and accommodation/housing units. It is an asset to the University of Pretoria, and within a short period of time it has earned itself international reputation. The project was executed in conjunction with Don Albert & Partners Architecture Design Interiors.

Food Lover's Montana is a revolutionary space, challenging the traditional experience of grocery aisles for a more intuitive user-experience in terms of the overall shop layout.

kwpCREATE consulted as Urban Designers, Landscape Architects and Architects on this project. Forming part of the Eastern Gateway Precinct Masterplan, the intervention involved the refurbishment of an existing heritage building/community centre, as well as the introduction of a public park consisting of outdoor gym facilities, soccer fields, playgrounds, and a community vegetable garden.

Lombardy Office Park, Lombardy, Pretoria East, 2016.

A new office block in the east of Pretoria, commanding spectacular views of the surrounding residential areas from its roof garden.

The two wings of the building are connected with a bridge housing communal boardrooms, from where the complete glass facades makes optimal use of the views. Office windows are shielded from harsh, direct sunlight by custom designed sunscreens made of low maintenance composite aluminium panels, laser cut to cast intricate patterns on the building’s skin in the afternoon and early morning.

The rooftop houses a staff canteen and bar in a lush garden setting, with composite timber deck and triangular shading elements, which echoes the triangular cutouts of the sunscreens.

Skukuza Rondawel Upgrades, Kruger National Park, 2025

The Skukuza Rondavel Upgrade project reimagines 28 units in the iconic Kruger National Park, blending heritage with modern comfort. It creates contemporary accommodation while preserving a place of deep historical and emotional significance.

A strong focus on local labour ensured skills development through hands-on training during construction. Durable, low-maintenance, and wildlife-resistant solutions were central to the design approach.

New Harvey roof tiles improve fire safety and prevent animal interference, while the original thatch is retained internally for insulation and character. Thoughtful extensions introduce additional sleeping space, upgraded bathrooms, and modernised kitchens.

Enclosed patios with indoor braais allow for year-round use while maintaining a connection to the outdoors.

Existing elements, like hardekool posts, were repurposed to celebrate the site’s identity. Landscaping embraces the natural veld, enhancing privacy while preserving the surrounding ecosystem. The result is a sustainable, locally inspired design that honours the past while meeting the needs of today’s visitors.

Winner of an Award Of Merit at the SAIA Mpumalanga Regional Awards, as well as a commendation at the 2024 Steel Awards.

Plant Sciences Complex, University of Pretoria, 2013.

The Plant Sciences Complex, commissioned by the University of Pretoria for the Faculty of Natural & Agricultural Science, facilitates a herbarium, laboratories, chemical stores, auditorium, offices and basement parking. Plants for experimental use are cultivated under a glass roof on the top level of the building.

The brief called for a single Plant Sciences Complex for the existing Plant Sciences Department, previously accommodated in seven buildings around the campus. The botanical garden left behind was replaced with two vertical rock walls, constructed of a steel structure and mesh baskets containing rocks and planters for a selection of indigenous plants found on rock cliff faces meant to become continuous living research projects for students of the department.

Gilfillan Park, Jeppestown, 2018

Situated in the bustling, overcrowded suburb of Jeppestown in Johannesburg, Gilfillan Park emerged from of a need for a functional, multi-purpose public space amidst the dense streets, office blocks, apartments and schools surrounding the site.

The existing park, consisting merely of neglected lawn areas and a number of exotic trees, was re-imagined through a process of community participation to redefine its value and address the needs within the local community.

Media, Communications, Culture and Language Building, University of Mpumalanga, 2026.

A faculty building for a newly formed department at the University of Mpumalanga, this building boasts a roofed courtyard space, giving shelter from the harsh Nelspruit sun and thunder showers, while allowing generous amounts of natural light. The design is inspired by the tree canopies of the lowveld, giving form to the courtyard roof, and the stone kloofs of nearby places like the Blyde River Canyon, informing the scale and textures of the brick walls. Furthermore, finishes draw inspiration from local weaving crafts, providing warm and humane atmospheres in the interior spaces.

Two smaller ancillary buildings form part of the complex - as well as a landscape adjacent to the main building that provides respite and acts as an extension of the more informal activities in the building.
