October is when the South African sun starts working on your walls in earnest. Five minutes outside now can save you a repaint in autumn.

Walk around the house and start with the north- and west-facing walls. They take the most sun, so they show trouble first.

✔ Colour that looks washed out compared to the sheltered side
✔ A powdery residue on your hand when you rub the wall
✔ Hairline cracks around windows and corners
✔ Gutters, fascias and garage doors that have lost their sheen
✔ Roof sheeting or tiles that are faded, rusting or growing algae

None of these fix themselves over summer. UV keeps working on a coating that is already tired, and a hot roof keeps pushing heat into the house.

Spring into early summer is the window to sort it, before the heat properly settles in.

Before you stand in the paint aisle debating two shades of grey, there are five things worth sorting out.

Our new guide walks through what actually determines whether an exterior repaint still looks good in five years, and none of it is the colour.

✔ Walk the outside of the house properly first. Chalky walls, dark patches at the base, lifting paint at the gutter line, cracks under windowsills, moss on the shaded side.
✔ Check the damp. A wall should be under 15 percent moisture before top coats go on, and dry to the touch does not mean dry.
✔ Repair cracks in the right order, including the two full days of waiting that everyone skips.
✔ Choose the product for where the wall faces, not for the colour card.
✔ Start in the morning, stop at three.

Half an hour of looking before you buy anything will save you a repaint.

Everyone repaints the walls. Almost nobody repaints the metalwork, and the metalwork is what makes the house look tired.

Gutters, downpipes, palisade fencing, garage doors, burglar bars. These take the worst of the weather and they are usually the first thing a visitor actually sees from the street.

Prominent Paints Water-Based Gloss Enamel is made for exactly these surfaces. It is non-yellowing, which matters if you are going white or off-white, and being water-based it is a far more pleasant job than the solvent alternatives. Clean-up is water, not turps.

A few things worth doing first:

✔ Remove loose rust properly, not just the flakes you can see
✔ Prime bare metal before you top coat
✔ Work early or late, not in the middle of a hot spring day

Doing the gutters and the gate at the same time as the walls costs a fraction more and changes the whole picture.

Same colour. Three walls. Three completely different rooms.

Nothing here changed except the sheen level, and most people never think about it until the wall is already up.

A matt finish absorbs light from every direction. It reads deeper and softer, it evens out an imperfect plaster run, and it forgives the wall for being a wall.

Add sheen and the light comes back at you in an organised way. The same colour reads lighter, cleaner and slightly more saturated. It also shows every ridge, patch and roller stop you left behind.

And sheen decides how the surface lives. The wall in a passage gets shoulders and school bags against it. That wall has to be washable, which is a job for a satin finish like Satin Silk. The wall behind your headboard does not, and a matt will look better there.

So settle the finish before you argue about the colour. The finish is half the colour.
