WHAT DOES RISING DAMP IN A HOUSE WALL MEAN?
Rising damp is a common building problem that occurs when moisture from the ground moves upward through the bricks and mortar of a building.
This usually happens when the Damp-Proof Course (DPC) has failed, been damaged, or has been bridged by soil or other materials.
HOW CAN YOU RECOGNISE RISING DAMP?
Look out for these common warning signs:
🔹 Brown or yellow tide marks – Discolouration often appears along the lower part of walls, sometimes reaching up to about 1 metre.
🔹 Peeling paint or damaged plaster – Paint may bubble or peel, while plaster can become soft, cracked, or crumble away.
🔹 White salt deposits – You may notice white, powdery or crusty marks on the wall. These are salts brought to the surface as moisture evaporates.
🔹 A musty smell – Persistent damp or earthy odours, particularly near the bottom of walls, can be a warning sign.
⚠️ WHAT CAUSES RISING DAMP?
Several factors can contribute:
• A failed or damaged DPC
• Soil, paving, mulch or garden beds bridging the DPC
• Poor drainage around the building
• Leaking pipes or defective gutters
• Exterior ground levels that are too high against the walls
HOW IS RISING DAMP TREATED?
The correct treatment depends on the cause and extent of the problem. It may involve:
✅ Removing salt-contaminated plaster
✅ Installing or restoring a suitable damp-proof barrier
✅ Applying appropriate salt-resistant plaster/render
✅ Improving drainage around the building
✅ Repairing leaking pipes, gutters or other sources of moisture
⚠️ Important: Not every damp wall is caused by rising damp. Leaking plumbing, penetrating damp, condensation and drainage problems can produce similar symptoms.
