The most successful leisure residential homes are designed around how people live, not just how a house looks.

One of the most common mistakes in residential design is focusing solely on the building itself, while overlooking the outdoor spaces where families spend much of their time. Patios, gardens, pools, fire pits, and entertainment areas often become the heart of a home, especially in South Africa's climate.

When designing leisure residential spaces, we always consider how indoor and outdoor environments connect. A well-designed transition between these spaces can make a home feel larger, more functional, and more enjoyable throughout the year.

Good residential design isn't measured by square metres alone. It's measured by the quality of the spaces where memories are made.

The Garankuwa Housing Development is a focused urban design response to the need for inclusive, well-structured residential environments within Ga-Rankuwa. The project moves beyond housing provision to shape a cohesive neighbourhood, where spatial planning, movement networks, and public spaces work together to support daily life.

Rooted in a people-centered approach, the development prioritises walkability, connectivity, and a strong sense of place. Streets, open spaces, and built form are carefully integrated to encourage community interaction, safety, and long-term resilience. It is an urban framework designed to support growth while creating meaningful, liveable environments for its residents.

Today we celebrate Dr. Calayde Davey, with a background in architecture and environmental design, focuses on urban strategy, digital transformation, and innovation in the built environment. A Senior Lecturer at the University of Pretoria, she leads the Africa Built Environment Digital Innovation (Africa-BEDI) initiative and Urban Strategy Studio, integrating emerging technologies with regenerative design and delivery practices. Her interests include Lean design and construction, organizational and urban strategy, and industry-academia collaboration. As co-founder of BIM Harambee, she supports the integration of digital tools in education and practice, preparing students for interdisciplinary professional environments. Her research and teaching emphasize strategic leadership, transdisciplinary practice, 6IR and regenerative development in response to evolving urban challenges.
