For decades, hydrogen cyanamide has been one of the standard tools used to overcome inadequate winter chilling and create more uniform budbreak in grapes and other deciduous crops.
But increasingly, growers and researchers around the world are asking a different question: Can we achieve the agronomic outcome without relying solely on such an aggressive physiological intervention?
At Rhino AgriVantage, we believe this is exactly where the role of biostimulation becomes interesting. Our agronomists have now worked with Unibrot for several seasons.
Unibrot is a CODA biostimulant formulated around plant-origin amino acids together with readily available nutrients, including calcium. Rather than simply creating a strong stress response to force dormancy release, its role is to support the plant's own physiological processes, helping to stimulate weaker buds, reduce the effects of apical dominance and promote more concentrated and uniform vegetative and reproductive development.
And importantly, we do not necessarily view it simply as a like-for-like replacement applied in exactly the same way as a traditional dormancy breaker. Our experience has been to use it pragmatically and cautiously within a broader crop programme, including in the conventional dormancy-management window and, where agronomically appropriate, later in development to help address uneven emergence and apical dominance.
That distinction matters.
The objective is no longer simply: “How do we force budbreak?” It is increasingly: “How do we manage the physiology of the crop to achieve uniform, productive development with less unnecessary intervention?”
Hydrogen cyanamide remains an effective agricultural tool, but its toxicity and handling requirements are also driving significant international research into alternatives. The direction of travel is clear: growers will increasingly need solutions that combine performance with worker safety, environmental responsibility and more precise physiological management.
Unibrot represents exactly the kind of technology we believe deserves a place in that conversation. Not because sustainability means accepting poorer agronomic performance.
