Running on empty? Sadly, that’s the story at our historic Westbourne Oval, where more than a century of sporting memories is being overshadowed by vandalism, theft and neglect. With the security contract having expired at the end of June and no renewal in place, this once-proud facility has been left vulnerable, with buildings trashed, fittings stripped and even basic facilities out of action. A venue that has served our schools, clubs and athletes for generations deserves better than being left to fall apart! Come on, Nelson Mandela Bay — surely protecting our sporting heritage shouldn’t be a losing game?
And then, just when we thought we’d had enough water for one day, it’s raining again! 🌧️ The second Test between the Proteas and Australia at St George’s Park is underway, but yesterday’s opening day was all but washed out, with just 12.2 overs bowled before the covers came out. Scott Boland managed to grab two wickets in two balls, leaving South Africa at 20/2 at stumps. Now the big question is whether day two will bring us more cricket or another rain delay. Our Proteas need runs, not raindrops!
At Westbourne Oval, the facilities are running on empty, and at St George’s Park, the overs are running out! One needs a serious maintenance plan, the other needs a serious batting partnership — and neither can afford another washout!
