It is not luck, and it is not that they are especially clever. German cockroaches have a strong instinct to keep both sides of their body touching something solid at once. That is why they love tight cracks and gaps rather than open space, especially ones close to food, water and warmth.

That is also why spraying the open floor rarely fixes a real problem. The cockroaches are not there. They are in the gap behind the fridge, the crack under the counter, the join where two surfaces meet.

Sealing those gaps does more good than another can of spray ever will.

Spring and summer are when cockroach numbers climb fastest in Gauteng. Worth checking now, before it becomes a problem.

The update asks sites to clearly document and verify prerequisite programme controls like pest control, and to link them directly into the HACCP plan, not just keep them in a folder for audit day.

A sealed bag is not a pest barrier.

In a peer-reviewed trial, Indianmeal moth larvae (𝘗𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢) chewed through intact multilayer plastic packaging, leaving holes of 0.3 to 1.3 mm. The longer the packs sat, the more of them were breached.

So if your dry goods store is only checked for rodents, there is a blind spot. Stored-product insects travel inside the product, and by the time moths are flying in the warehouse the stock has usually been standing too long.

Three practical moves for a plant:

𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁, inspect incoming dry goods on receipt instead of trusting the seal.

𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱, put pheromone monitors in dry goods and finished goods, and trend the catches.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱, set a maximum residence time so stock moves before an insect can complete a lifecycle.

Cold Gauteng nights this winter meant more rats and mice trying to get into warehouses and food plants. As the weather warms up, do not assume the problem left with the cold. 𝘙𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴 and 𝘔𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘶𝘴 do not disappear, they just get harder to spot on a walk through.

𝗥𝟲𝟯𝟴 says food premises must stay pest free, and a proper pest file needs a trend report, not just a clean floor on the day someone visits. If your bait station numbers spiked in June or July, check they came back down before you tell an auditor everything is fine.

Fewer inspectors are getting round to check food premises in Gauteng this year.

A Public Protector investigation found municipal health inspectors covering more food premises than they can properly manage, so the required quarterly check on high risk sites is hard to keep up. The law has not changed though, food premises still have to stay pest free. And the cooler nights we are having right now are exactly when rodents push into warehouses and kitchens looking for warmth and food.

Waiting for an inspector to flag a problem is a risky plan at the moment. A documented pest programme protects you either way, inspection or no inspection.
