The sky was clear when you started painting. Birds were flying and chirping happily.

Then out of the blue, the clouds started gathering ominously, the wind started picking up, and you looked at that last section and thought, “Let me just finish quickly!” 👀

We would not do that, if we were you. Here is why...

👉Rain can damage fresh exterior paint, while strong wind can blow dust and debris onto a wet surface. Not only that, the temperature and humidity can affect drying times.

So....🧐
Before you start an outdoor painting job, check the weather forecast and the paint manufacturer's guidance for suitable conditions and drying times.

And if the weather turns ugly while you're busy? Don't rush to beat the rain. Protect the work area if you can do so safely, and follow the product guidance before continuing.

A delayed paint job is better than having to redo the whole thing. 🎨

You've opened your paint tin, and the paint isn't flowing like it used to. Now you're thinking, “Let me just add a little water. Problem solved!” 👀

Hold that thought... let us explain

Unfortunately reaching for water is not always a right thing to do.
This is because it depends on the type of paint and what's happened to it.

👉If it's water-based paint that's simply thickened a little, check the manufacturer's instructions before adding water to it.

And if the paint has dried out, has formed stubborn lumps, or developed a skin throughout, adding water won't bring that dead horse back to life.

Sorry, mate🤪

And if you're dealing with solvent-based paint, water definitely isn't the fix!

The lesson? Don't turn your paint into a science experiment. 😂 Check what the manufacturer recommends before trying to rescue that tin.

You've finished painting, the wall looks good, and now it's time to remove the masking tape.

Then it starts pulling paint off with it. 😩

Or it tears into tiny pieces, leaves sticky residue, or ruins that neat edge you worked so hard to create.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

🖌️ You left the tape on too long.Some tapes become harder to remove cleanly if you exceed their recommended removal time.

🖌️ Paint dried across the tape edge. The paint film can tear when you pull the tape away.

🖌️ The existing paint wasn't firmly bonded. Tape can lift loose or peeling paint from the surface.

HOW DO YOU REMOVE IT PROPERLY?

✅ Check the tape manufacturer's instructions for when to remove it. Some tapes should come off while the paint is wet; others are designed for removal after drying.

✅ Pull slowly, folding the tape back over itself rather than yanking it straight away from the wall.

✅ If paint has dried across the edge, carefully score along it with a sharp utility knife before removing the tape. Use a light touch to avoid damaging the surface.

WHAT IF THE PAINT IS ALREADY PEELING?

Stop pulling! Carefully release the tape, let the paint dry fully, then repair any damaged areas before touching up the finish.

**THE TAKEAWAY?**

Choose the right tape, follow its removal instructions, and don't leave removal until the last minute.

The last thing you want is to finish painting beautifully, only for your masking tape to take a piece of the wall with it. 😂

You've run out of paint and have a small section left to paint. Now what?

You're almost done.

The whole wall is looking good, you've packed away half your stuff and then you notice…

That little section.

And there's barely any paint left in the tin. 😩

So you start thinking:

“Surely I can stretch this enough to cover it.”

Maybe. But this is where we advise you to rethink your step.

If you don't have enough paint to apply a proper coat, trying to spread a tiny amount over a larger area can leave you with thin, uneven coverage that stands out once it dries.

And don't start adding water or another paint just to make it go further.

Do this instead:

First, check exactly how much area you still need to cover.

If it's like a tiny section, you may have enough paint left for a proper coat - just don't overload the roller or keep going back over the same area trying to squeeze every last drop out of it.

If you don't have enough, stop.

Get more of the "same paint, colour and finish" before completing that section.

And if you're buying another tin from a different batch, compare it carefully with what you've already used and, if possible, test it before putting it straight onto the wall.

Because there's nothing more annoying than finishing the entire wall…

…and then creating a tiny patch that looks like it belongs to a completely different wall. 😂

Don't stretch the paint until the finish suffers.

A small section is still part of the finished wall.

You’ve got half a tin left from one day, and another one tin from a different day, and now you need just about enough paint to finish the job.

So you start thinking:

“Let me just mix these two.”

Let's back it up there for a second.

If the paint is the "same product, same colour, same finish and from the same batch", mixing them is fine, it's less risk.

However and we mean HOWEVER, if they’re different batches, the colour can vary slightly- even IF the label says the same colour.

And if you're mixing different products, finishes or types of paint?

The answer there is "Don't."

You could end up with differences in sheen, texture, drying or coverage that show up on the wall.

Before you pour them together:

Check the labels.

✔Same manufacturer.
✔Same product.
✔Same colour.
✔Same finish.

And if you're unsure, don't sacrifice the whole tin to find out.

Mix a small amount separately and test it first.

Also, if you've got enough paint from one tin to finish a whole wall, don't create a problem by combining it unnecessarily.

More paint in one bucket doesn't automatically mean better paint.

Sometimes the safest way to save paint is simply to leave the tins separate until you know exactly what you're dealing with.

Picking white colours for your space can be a challenge. White especially is a bit of a dicy one, on another white surface it can look yellow, that's why it's important to do a test and swap it on the surface just to check how it settles. We love the example here, because it shows you the difference between warm white and crisp, creamier white. Which to choose? We say it depends on your space. In doors, you may want something less cooler and more warmer...

Is it normal for dark paint to need more coats?

Yes - sometimes.

And there’s a reason.

Dark colours can need more coats to get an even, solid finish, especially when you're painting over a much lighter colour.

You might put on the first coat and think:

“Ummm… this does not look like the colour on the tin.”😂

You can still see the lighter colour underneath, the coverage looks patchy and you're wondering if you've bought the wrong paint.

Don't panic.

The first coat is building your base. The second coat is where you usually start seeing the colour come together properly.

But it doesn't stop at “dark paint = more coats.”

The colour underneath matters.
The type and quality of paint matters.
The surface you're painting matters.
And how evenly you apply each coat matters.

❌What NOT to do:
Don't keep going over the same area while the paint is still wet because it looks patchy.

You'll disturb the paint and can create roller marks and an uneven finish.

✔What to do instead:
Finish the coat, let it dry properly, then assess the coverage.

If you still see the colour underneath, apply another even coat until you no longer see it.

You removed the wallpaper.

The wall looks clear.

But when you run your hand over it...

Still feel tacky or l sticky?

Don't paint yet.❌

Wallpaper removal can leave adhesive residue behind, and painting over that residue can interfere with how your new coating adheres and how the final surface looks.

This is one of those jobs where getting excited because the wallpaper is finally gone can make you want to grab the paint immediately.

Resist the temptation. 😂

Get the adhesive residue off, prepare the surface properly and make sure it's ready for the coating you're applying.

Removing wallpaper is only half the job.

Preparing what's underneath is the other half.

Your brush keeps splitting at the tip?

That can make cutting-in incredibly frustrating.🙈

A brush that's in poor condition, with dried paint caught in the bristles isn't suited to the job, so it won't give you the same control as a brush that's properly maintained.
Facts💯

And forcing a damaged brush to behave like a new one isn't going to improve the finish. Sorry🙈

Best thing to do:
Clean your brush after each job and before you start painting, check the bristles.

✔Are they clean?

✔Are they sticking together?

✔Is there dried paint near the base?

✔Has the shape of the brush changed?

Your brush is one of the things between you and that nice clean edge. Look after it. Ok🧐

Same paint.

Same colour.

Two walls.

Why don't they look the same?🙈🧐

Well, let's break this one down S-L-O-W-L-Y. You see this can happen because the walls aren't actually giving you the same conditions.

One wall might receive more natural light.

One may be next to a different colour.

One might have a different surface or previous coating.

Even the direction a wall faces can change how light hits it.

So before deciding that something has gone wrong with the paint, look at the "room around the paint."

👉Needless to point to out, colour is affected by its environment.
