A proud moment for Greg Dowsett Landscaping.

Earlier this year, at the 2026 SALI Awards of Excellence, Greg received Double Gold for House Roberts, recognised in both Landscape Design & Construction and Waterwise categories.

The project brought together contemporary architecture, detailed landscape design and layered planting on a dramatic hillside site, with every part of the garden considered as part of the whole.

Awards like this are a wonderful recognition of the finished result, but they also speak to everything behind it - the planning, the problem-solving, the craftsmanship and the team who bring each design to life.

Not every planting opportunity starts with a flowerbed.

Planters can introduce height, colour, structure and focal points into spaces where traditional planting may not be possible, or where the design simply needs something more defined.

Across Greg’s work, containers are used as part of the landscape rather than as an afterthought. Their scale, material, position and planting all contribute to how the space feels and functions.

From oversized statement pieces to clean architectural forms, the right planter can completely change the character of a courtyard, entrance or paved area.

Some of the simplest-looking gardens take the most thought to get right.

For Greg, creating a calm, uncluttered space starts with structure - understanding the proportions of the garden, how it relates to the home, where strong lines are needed and where the planting should soften them.

In this garden, the clipped hedging, open lawn and restrained planting were deliberately kept simple. Nothing is competing for attention, but every element has a role.

That balance is what makes simplicity feel considered rather than empty.

When Greg designs a garden, he isn’t designing the planting in isolation.

He is considering the architecture of the home, how people will move through the space, the combination of plants and materials, changes in texture, focal points, proportions and ultimately the atmosphere the garden should create.

You can see those decisions across Greg’s work.

A path leads rather than simply connects. Planting is chosen for form as well as colour. Hard landscaping gives the garden structure. Different textures add depth. And every element has to work as part of the same space.

That is what brings a garden together.

Water has a way of changing the atmosphere of a garden before you even consciously notice it.

A quiet reflection, the sound of moving water, the contrast between stone and softness, or a strong architectural feature can completely alter how a space feels.

The important part is that it belongs in the design.

Whether the approach is natural, formal or contemporary, a water feature should work with the proportions, planting and character of the garden rather than simply being added as decoration.

Thoughtfully placed, water becomes part of the experience of the space.

Some things get better with time

A garden does not always need everything to feel pristine and new.
Weathered metal, aged timber, stone and natural patina can introduce a depth that newer materials simply do not have. When they are used with intention, those imperfections become part of the character of the space.

Here, the softness and fresh growth of the succulents sit comfortably against materials that already carry a little history.
It is that contrast that makes the detail interesting.
