INCIDENT REPORT
Suspected Cable Theft – Vehicle Intercept and Arrest
Background
On 18 September 2026, cables were stolen from a Vodacom site, and a criminal case was subsequently opened in connection with the incident.
Following the initial incident, information was received regarding several suspected cable theft incidents in the surrounding areas, extending as far as Laingsburg and other locations. Information relating to vehicles believed to be involved in these incidents was gathered and shared with relevant stakeholders to assist in identifying and intercepting the suspects and vehicles concerned.
Incident
During the evening of 27 September 2026, the LPR system flagged one of the vehicles previously identified as suspicious while it was travelling through the Citrusdal area on the N7.
Following the alert, BRS reaction vehicles were deployed to strategic lookout points, while the Control Room monitored the relevant CCTV cameras.
At approximately 23h00, the identified vehicle was spotted by BRS patrol vehicles, and an alert was raised. With the assistance of the SAPS West Coast Flying Squad, Provincial Traffic and SAPS Citrusdal, the vehicle was successfully stopped.
A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of cables, four large batteries and various tools believed to have been used in the removal of the cables.
One person was arrested at the scene. Three additional occupants fled on foot immediately after the vehicle was stopped and were not apprehended at the scene.
Outcome
One suspect was arrested, and suspected stolen property, including cables and batteries, as well as various tools allegedly used in the commission of the offence, was recovered.
The incident demonstrates the value of effective information-sharing between stakeholders, supported by LPR technology, CCTV monitoring and coordinated response efforts. The combined approach assisted in identifying and intercepting a vehicle previously linked to suspected criminal activity and resulted in the arrest of one suspect and the recovery of suspected stolen property.
